Butker’s return from a kn͏ee injury, however, remains ͏un͏cer͏tain.
Life in the NFL is never short of surprises, and Matthew Wright is living proof of it this week. Fresh off being named the NFL Special Teams Player of the Week, the Chiefs kicker found himself jobless just days later. According to insider Adam Schultz, “Chiefs are releasing kicker Matthew Wright today, per source. Harrison Butker now is expected to kick Sunday vs. the Browns.” Talk about a whirlwind turn of events!

This move clears the path for Harrison Butker to take on kicking duties in the Chiefs’ high-stakes showdown with the Browns. While Butker’s return inspires confidence, the timing leaves many scratching their heads. For Wright, it’s a harsh reminder that in the NFL, you’re only as secure as your next kick.
HC Andy Reid also updated on the kicker’s status, saying, “We’re going to see how he does here. He’ll get a few snaps [in practice].” While Butker has missed four games due to a meniscus injury, Reid didn’t confirm if Butker would be ready to return for the Chiefs’ upcoming game against the Browns.
Meanwhile, Wright, who filled in admirably for Butker, was recently named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Wright’s performance, including the game-winning field goal against the Chargers, has kept the Chiefs’ special teams afloat in Butker’s absence. However, Reid is still keeping his options open and will make a final decision closer to game day.

Matthew Wright’s future in the NFL: What’s next for the “kicker for hire”
Matthew ͏Wright’s NFL jou͏rney has been nothi͏ng ͏short of͏ a ͏rollercoaster. From h͏i͏s 31͏-yard, ͏w͏alk-off field goal to secure the ͏Chiefs’ AFC West titl͏e t͏o͏ being named AFC ͏Sp͏ecial Tea͏ms P͏la͏yer of the Wee͏k, Wright’͏s brie͏f stint with K͏a͏nsas C͏it͏y left a lasting impress͏i͏on. ͏But wit͏h his release ahead of the ͏Week 15 matchup agains͏t the Cleve͏land B͏rowns, hi͏s future remains uncertain.
Wright’s path has been full of twists, playing for eight different NFL teams since 2019. Despite the unpredictable nature of his career, he’s consistently shown he can step up when called upon. “It’s a testament to the teammates, especially the long snapper and holder, for making the transition easy,” Wright said, acknowledging the challenges of coming into a new team and still delivering. His ability to perform under pressure is a major asset, something that could keep him in demand as a reliable backup or emergency kicker.

Andy Reid, however, wasn’t quick to speculate on Wright’s future but did note his impact: “He’s a guy who has done it before in games… none bigger than that one,” referring to Wright’s clutch performance in Kansas City. As Wright continues to navigate his unpredictable career, his skill set and experience should keep him in the league for years to come.
