Is Andy Reid's strategy to unleash Kelce the key to a Chiefs' 3-peat?

The Chiefs are on lock with a 3-peat on their mind (and in their heart) as they go 7-0 after the win over the Raiders. Heck yeah, perfect! But get ready for more trouble, as Andy Reid has just announced a plan to unlock Travis Kelce. That’s right, Reid announced mid-season that the Chiefs are ready to unleash their veteran tight end like never before. And honestly, the rest of the league might want to brace themselves.

Coach Reid hinted at this shift, saying they’ve been finding ways to get Kelce into spots where defenses aren’t doubling up on him as much: “He’s one of the great ones. You might slow him down for a minute, but not for very long.” If Sunday’s win over the Raiders was any indication, this new Kelce-centric approach is paying off.

I mean, it’s not just words. Kelce put up his best game of the season with 10 catches for 90 yards and snagged his first touchdown off a 5-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes. It’s safe to say the doubters got a solid response.

And it had been coming for a long time. The season started slow for Kelce—eight catches for 69 yards across in the first 3 games (and no TD, yikes!). Questions about his age started swirling. I mean, fair enough—he is 35, and in the NFL, that’s basically ancient. But Reid wasn’t having it. “They’re working hard to take Kelce out of the picture,” he said after the Falcons game.

And it’s safe to say that the HC has stuck to his guns, and now Kelce’s reminding everyone why he’s a top-tier tight end. As Reid put it, “He just wants to win and make sure we’re doing well offensively. He isn’t selfish that way.”

Still, the Chiefs did hedge their bets a bit. They were worried (even if Reid wouldn’t admit it) as they signed Jody Fortson, who rejoined the practice squad after leaving in the offseason. Fortson has seen some action, especially in the Raiders game, where he set a season-high with 19 snaps. It was clear insurance, just in case Kelce needed the support.

But after Sunday, that seems more like a backup plan than a real worry. Bottom line? It looks like Travis Kelce is back in action. With the Bucs up next, the Chiefs’ #87 has the chance to show that he’s not “slowing down”—he’s just getting started.

Travis Kelce 2.0

Tampa has a problem on its hands, and his name is Travis Kelce. Fresh off a season-best performance, Kelce’s resurgence couldn’t come at a worse time for the Bucs defense that’s struggled to contain tight ends all season. (The best time for the Chiefs Kingdom). And with the Chiefs’ offense seemingly peaking, Tampa’s got to be sweating.

And sound the alarm as their top offensive weapons—Chris Godwin and Mike Evans—are down as well. So, they are going to be inside the Arrowhead, cheering for the D-line to show up. Yup, the defense that got sliced by Kirk Cousins and the Falcons. But now they’re facing Patrick Mahomes, who’s gelling with his favorite target, Travis Kelce, all over again.

Add DeAndre Hopkins to that, and it just keeps getting worse for the Bucs. “He knows how to win football games,” Kelce said about Hopkins on his podcast. And with D-Hop adjusting to the KC playbook quickly. It only makes the Kelce-Hopkins one-two punch a nightmare for defenses. Especially those already vulnerable in the middle.

With Bucs defenders already burnt by tight ends like Kyle Pitts and Mark Andrews this season, Kelce could be in line for another big day. And if they don’t tighten up, #87 could just turn this into another turn of the page in his comeback arc. This… This is Travis Kelce’s second act, Chiefdom! Are you ready?
