Is Justin Fields being unfairly benched, or is Russell Wilson the Steelers' only hope for success?

Justin Fields might just be the unluckiest person in all of Pittsburgh right now. The Steelers regular QB Russell Wilson will potentially return from his calf injury. If this happens, Fields could see himself getting benched this week against the New York Jets. The 25-year-old excelled at the opportunity he was presented with. He led the Steelers to a commendable 4-2 start this season.

Although his start wasn’t spectacular, Fields making way for Russ to take over does raise questions about where it all went wrong. Sharing his thoughts, the Steelers radio network host Gerry Dulac gave an interesting insight regarding the receivers’ room this season. “It helps them identify what they have at wide receivers. They know what they have at George Pickens, but they have very little else. And so, you know, I learned this a long time ago: Great receivers don’t make an average QB better, but great QBs make average receivers better.”

Well, it might be true, as the only reliable receivers in the squad are Roman Wilson, Van Jefferson, and Calvin Austin III. Wilson played his first game in black and gold against the Raiders last week, having suffered an ankle injury that kept him out for the start of this campaign. Elsewhere, there is Austin, who hasn’t really impressed since joining the roster as a fourth-round pick in 2o22. Playing his third season in the NFL, Calvin’s best game came against the Chargers, where he recorded a career-high 95 receiving yards.

Dulac wasn’t the only one who talked about a possible boost with Wilson throwing from week 7. As Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette expressed, George Pickens might be the biggest beneficiary of the rumored move to Russell Wilson at quarterback. Pat Freiermuth a close second. They definitely need more out of both. They still need someone to step up as the third option in the passing game.” With Fields starting for the Steelers, they have found themselves within the bottom in terms of passing yards per game. The 25-year-old himself has averaged only 184.3 passing yards over the six games he led in black and gold.

As for Pickens, he ranks 19th for 363 receiving yards while averaging 60.5 per game. They have really combined well. Fields has targeted Pickens only 44 times while catching 26 passes with one fumble and zero touchdowns. Compared to last season’s 64 catches for 1,140 yards and five TDs, these were not the numbers Pickens would have expected this season.

Justin Fields gives an honest take amid Russell Wilson’s imminent return from injury

Fields went into a self-assessment mode when the rumors of Wilson taking his place at the center started coming out from Pittsburgh. “I don’t think I played good enough. If I’m being real with you. If I’m being real with myself. I think if I did play well enough, I don’t think there would be any sort of who should be playing, who should not.” Over the six games he has started in place of Wilson, Fields has only managed to rack up more than 240 yards twice.

But his passing percentage of 66.3 for a totality of 1,106 yards did help the Steelers win 4 games under him. The 25-year-old also added five passing TDs and 5 rushing TDs to his tally. He even helped the Steelers get back into the winning column last week. They beat the Raiders 32-13 with his two rushing TDs.

However, when he was asked about being satisfied with his performances, Fields said, “Not really. I mean. I want to be 6-0 right now. But it was a great opportunity for me. Of course, I’m grateful for the opportunity. I did get those first six weeks, and we’ll just see what happens.” Wilson was the designated start going into the regular season. Taking over from backup QB Justin Fields, can he help the Steelers up their game? Or will he need some time to settle, since he has just recovered from a calf injury that sidelined him for the first six weeks? Guess, we will find out next week in Pittsburgh.
