Should the Chiefs have shown more support to Marquise Brown instead of releasing him after his injury?

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ preseason opener didn’t end well for them. While a 26-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars will make their coaches ponder, they have one more issue to resolve. Earlier this offseason, they signed wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown to strengthen their offense. While Head Coach Andy Reid and QB Patrick Mahomes were happy about the signing, now both have to sort their attacking formation. The WR got injured in the game against the Jaguars.

Jaguars CB Montaric Brown took the WR down, after which he left the field. He suffered a shoulder injury, which mostly happens in a car crash, a sternoclavicular joint dislocation. While the WR was in the hospital undergoing checkups, Reid looked concerned during the post-game conference.

I think he (Marquise Brown) will miss some time: Andy Reid

The veteran coach has seen enough players get injured and return to the field in his decades-long career. With the season less than a month away, he knows that recovery will take time and the team might have to start the season without the WR. Known for being straightforward, he stated, “I think he’ll miss some time. We’ll just see where it’s at, I mean, I said that they’re kind of going through it right now and we’ll know more later on.” A bombshell there!

However, after a thorough medical evaluation, he left the hospital and is now looking forward to the recovery. He posted his photo on an IG story with Rod Wave’s song ‘Checkmate.’ Looks like he has mentally prepared for the tough work ahead. The only question is how soon he can return to the gridiron. It will be a miracle if he comes back before the first game against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5. The damage is huge, and everybody is praying for his return.

Have an interesting take?

Hollywood Brown was the Chiefs’ number 1 WR for 2024. Between the mandatory minicamp and training camp, he started doing the work to get ready. While most players were resting or vacationing, he often posted workout videos. He also mixed with the Chiefs’ locker room pretty well, especially with their star QB.

Mahomes was amazed at WR’s abilities and expressed that Brown would create more opportunities for other players in the offense. He even applauded the WR for setting himself perfectly with their attack, stating, “It’s hard to learn this offense and I feel like he’s done a great job picking it up very fast. Obviously, you see the ability.” Just as both of them were forming a trusted bond, the plan has derailed.

Before yesterday’s game, Brown tweeted, “God makes no mistakes.” With firm belief and determination, he can bounce back from the injury.

Last time when Marquise Brown was in a similar situation

Till now, 2021 has been Brown’s best season with 1,008 receiving yards and 91 receptions in 16 games. However, he requested a trade from the Baltimore Ravens, as he didn’t like their offense. His wish was granted with a transfer to the Arizona Cardinals (in 2022) where he played alongside Kyler Murray, his college quarterback. While the Bird Gang was happy with his performances in the first few games, tragedy struck.

In the week 6 game against the Seattle Seahawks, he got a fractured left foot and was placed on Injury reserve. However, he showed resilience and made a comeback in the week 12 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Showing no signs of slowing down, he finished the 2022 season with 709 yards and 67 receptions in 12 games.

2 years later, he is in the same situation. However, this time, Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown has a more seasoned management to help him. With self-determination and the right approach, he can make a timely return. While Chiefdom will be happy, the locker room will get a vital boost for their 3-peat.
