Aisha and Kareem Abdullah had nine children in total and Ameer Abdullah is the youngest. All of his older siblings have achieved success in their different industries. Halimah Abdullah, the family’s eldest child, graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. She works as a journalist and editor for NBC News in Washington, D.C., where she handles political problems. Muhammad, the family’s first son, is an attorney who studied at Alabama State. Additionally, Ameer’s sister Ruqayyah McPherson (UAB) received a degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Abdullah didn’t get the opportunity to be spoilt by his parents, Kareem and Aisha, in Homewood, Alabama, because he was the youngest of nine children. With six college degrees under their belts and two more advanced degrees for some of them, Abdullah’s two brothers and six sisters set the standard for education within the family. During his initial news conference at the Lions headquarters located in Allen Park, Ameer joked, “I didn’t want to be the oddball.”

In Abdullah’s instance, he corresponds with the university where they obtained their degree: “My oldest sister, Halimah, graduated from the University of Alabama. My oldest brother, Muhammad, went to undergrad at Alabama State and went to law school at Alabama. My sister Ruqayyah went to UAB (Alabama-Birmingham). My sister Aisha went to Talladega. Khadija went to Tuskegee. Kareemah went to Clark (Atlanta). Madinah went to undergrad at Alabama A&M and she’s about to graduate pharmacy at Samford in Homewood. My brother Kareem graduated from Auburn University. Then there’s me.”

The 11-member family, with no other relatives close by, grew close and boisterous, laughing, and sometimes squabbled siblings filled the house. However, the bond Ameer Abdullah has with his brother Kareem Jr. has got the spotlight.

Ameer Abdullah’s special bonding with his brother Kareem Jr.

Ameer Abdullah’s parents, Kareem Sr. and Aisha, as well as his eight elder siblings—two brothers and six sisters with an 18-year age gap between the eldest and youngest—have all contributed to his ascent to the top. In fact, among the extremely talented family of lawyers, musicians, surgeons, business owners, bankers, and journalists, the nine-year NFL veteran might even be the odd man out.

“All the influence that I got from them, as you can hear all the different things that they do, really gave me probably the most well-rounded perspective to head into life with,” he said. “I saw everything from people who are into politics, people who are into legislature, and then you have people who are into music, so I feel like I became really well-rounded growing up in our household.”

Even though he had a lot of role models, being the youngest kid naturally causes one to become tough, quickly. “He definitely had a chip on his shoulder,” said his brother, Kareem Jr. “He was always fighting to be heard, fighting back when we would tease him and pick on him. He’s always had that mentality of like, ‘I’m not gonna sit here and let them pick on me, I’m gonna defend myself.’ And even when he didn’t need to defend himself, he was very assertive with, you know, his opinions and his thoughts.”

Despite having the same birthday and being only four years older, Ameer was frequently Kareem’s shadow, spending time with his friends, enjoying music, engaging in video games, and going to sports in the neighborhood. But Kareem noticed one unique characteristic about his brother. Compared to other children his age, he had always had greater athletic ability.

“We didn’t have a lot of money at the time,” Ameer Abdullah said. “Playing park league football was kind of expensive. You’ve got to get your own pads; you’ve got to do all these things. My brother would beg my dad, like, ‘You’ve got to let him play. He’s good.'”

“I was like his unofficial coach because I would always see the potential in him,” Kareem added. “He was just way faster and stronger than all the other kids.”

Ameer Abdullah’s journey highlights how growing up in a family of high achievers shaped his success. His siblings’ diverse accomplishments reflect a legacy of hard work and mutual support that propelled him to greatness.
