Does Ja'Marr Chase's refusal to acknowledge Mahomes fuel the Chiefs-Bengals rivalry even more?

Imagine walking into work and hearing your rival’s name shouted by his boss’s doppelganger. That’s exactly what happened to Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase at training camp. The culprit? “Almost Andy Reid,” a Chiefs superfan with an uncanny resemblance to Kansas City’s head coach.

This unexpected encounter added fuel to the already blazing Bengals-Chiefs rivalry. As Chase strolled in, greeted by cheering fans, “Almost Andy Reid” bellowed “Patrick” several times. The playful jab was a direct response to Chase’s recent refusal to name the Chiefs’ star quarterback in an NFL Top 100 clip. “I was watching an interview with Jamar Chase. And he seems to have forgotten the name of our quarterback. So, I thought maybe I’d come through here and yell it out when he comes through” He said to the camera before Chase walked in.

Behind the “Almost Andy Reid” persona is Matthew Black, a VP of Sales at Hyalogic, LLC by day and a Chiefs superfan by… well, always. Black’s journey to fan fame began with a Halloween costume contest win in 2018. Since then, he’s become a beloved figure in Chiefs Kingdom, known for his spot-on Reid impersonation.

“I just do it because I’m a huge Chiefs fan,” Black explained back in February when the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office invited him for their roll call during Super Bowl Week. “I’m what they call a super fan. And I just happen to look like Andy Reid.” His commitment to the role is impressive – he even maintains Reid’s signature mustache, trimming it every couple of days.

Black’s impact goes beyond mere imitation. He uses his platform to support local businesses and charities, proving that fan culture can be a force for good. His Cameo page, where he offers personalized video messages, boasts a near-perfect 4.99 rating from 880 reviews.

But there’s more to Black than meets the eye. He’s also a classically trained opera singer, having performed lead roles in 30 different operas. This unexpected talent adds another layer to his already colorful persona, making “Almost Andy Reid” a truly unique figure in the NFL fan landscape.

Now let’s turn our heads to Chase’s quipp on Mahomes. In an interview this week for NFL Top 100 clip, Chase said, “I’m not saying his name, brother. I’m sorry. Joe Burrow — I’m not saying that guy’s name. He’s good. He’s amazing,” Chase admitted about Mahomes. “Not gonna lie, I’m salty, though. I’m a little salty. Two years in a row — I’m putting Burrow first.” This verbal dodge highlighted the intensifying competition between these AFC powerhouses.

The Chiefs-Bengals rivalry has become one of the NFL’s most captivating storylines. They’ve clashed five times in the past three years, including two nail-biting AFC Championship games. Cincinnati currently holds a slight 3-2 edge, but Kansas City’s recent back-to-back Super Bowl victories have only heightened the tension.

Ja’Marr Chase’s contract conundrum

While the rivalry plays out in public, behind the scenes, the Bengals face a crucial decision regarding Chase’s future. The star receiver is due for a contract extension, and the negotiations could set a new precedent for the franchise.

Historically, the Bengals and the Green Bay Packers have avoided giving non-quarterbacks guaranteed money beyond the first year of veteran contracts. This stance has put them at odds with league trends, where top-tier players often receive guarantees into the second and even third years.

Bengals president Mike Brown emphasized Chase’s importance at the team’s annual media luncheon on Monday: “We’re willing to bend over backwards to get a deal done with Chase.” However, the specifics of such a deal remain uncertain.

Former Vikings GM Rick Spielman weighed in on the potential shift in the Bengals’ approach as per ESPN: “That’s your new business principle going forward, for the most part. Especially if you’re dealing with a Ja’Marr Chase-type talent.”

The recent contract signed by Justin Jefferson with the Vikings, guaranteeing up to $25 million in the third year, could be a benchmark for Chase’s negotiations. As the 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on these two teams. Will Chase’s reluctance to name Mahomes fuel his on-field performance? Can “Almost Andy Reid” continue to rally the Chiefs Kingdom with his antics? One thing’s certain – this rivalry is far from over, and fans are in for a wild ride.
