In 1984, Eric Dickerson made one record which is now again in the spotlight after 40 years. Philadelphia Eagles’s Saquon Barkley has the chance to break this record, as he needs just 101 yards to do so. But a recent harsh decision by the franchise and coach Nick Sirianni, has shattered the running back and his family’s dreams.

Eric Dickerson set the rushing record that time with 2,105 yards in 16 games. On the other hand, Saquon Barkley has till now recorded 2,005 rushing yards in 17 games this regular season. As he only needed 101 yards to become the first NFL player to achieve so, coach Nick Sirianni and the team aren’t allowing him to do so. The reason? Of course, the fear of potential injuries in the final matchup of the regular season before the playoffs.

Hence, coach Sirianni decided to bench him this time for the Week 18 game against his former team, the Giants. Although it has hurt Saquon Barkley, he knows what’s right for the team at present. But being his father, Alibay Barkley, wanted his son to achieve this milestone, as he wasn’t happy with the coach’s decision. According to reporter Zach Berman, the RB said about his father, “He definitely wanted me to play. Selfishly for him, you got to think about it: For however long, if it took a year for someone to break it or another 40-50 years, our last name would have been attached to that. So I see it from that side, too.”

Obviously, for a father and the entire Barkley family, it would have been great to see the athlete record history in the NFL. But as the demand is high to keep the key player out of the injured reserve list for the playoffs, everyone is accepting this with a heavy heart. This is evident in what Saquon Barkley further said about his father: “But at the end of the day, the most important thing is to win football games. And he’s (Alibay) the one to raise me about the team, too. So he can have his little selfish moment, but he’ll get over it.”

It would have been a dream come true moment for Saquon Barkley, his family, teammates, and his fans. Nonetheless, all of them are keeping the hope alive for the last moment, wishing that perhaps Sirianni changes his decision. Until then, the current record holder himself is having his dream come true moment.

Eric Dickerson will now be happy to find Saquon Barkley out.

Almost everyone is pulling for Eagles’s RB Saquon Barkley to set the mark. But wait! There’s one person who might not want it to happen, and that is Eric Dickerson himself. While speaking to the media this week earlier, the record holder expressed, “I don’t think he’ll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it. Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football. That’s the way I look at it. If he’s fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it’s a great record to have.”

Well, consider it being selfish or not, generally record holders don’t want to see their records broken, right? Anyway, as now Saquon Barkley is out of the last game against the Giants on Sunday, January 5, his name will still be recorded in the history book of the league. Why?

Well, it’s because he is the ninth player to eclipse 2,000 yards in the league. And guess what? Four of them – Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis, and O.J. Simpson – are all in the Hall of Fame!
