It’s the free agency season, and we are seeing a lot of talented players hitting the free agency market this time. One of those free agents is Alexander Mattison, who is being released prematurely by the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings finished 7-10, and Mattison put up an average performance in the 2023 season. Maybe that’s why the Vikings are releasing him.

However, some good news: these free agents might have to spend less time finding a new home because the NFL raised the salary cap to $255 million this year. Adam Schefter shed light on recent developments in the Minnesota Vikings RB dept.

Schefter’s post on X suggests that the RB Alexander Mattison is being released by the Vikings and hitting free agency this off-season. Surprisingly, he signed a two-year deal with the Vikings last year for $7 million. If the Vikings decide to release him before June 1, the team will be left with a dead cap of $4 million and save $600k in cap space. But if they trade him pre-June 1, the Vikings will have a dead cap of $1.2 million while saving about $3.3 million in cap space.

Schefter’s post on X reveals, “Vikings informed RB Alexander Mattison today that they are releasing him, per source. Mattison took over last season for Dalvin Cook and ran for 700 yards and caught 30 passes. Now he becomes a free agent again, like last year when he signed a two-year deal with Minnesota.”

Ty Chandler is expected to take Mattison’s place as the starting running back for the team. This is his third year with the Vikings. However, it would be naïve to think that the Vikings will start their 2024 season with a hole in their RB department.

Other alternatives for the Vikings

As it turns out, the Giants released Saquon Barkley, who is hands down one of the best running backs in the league. Whether they want him in their arsenal is a different thing altogether. Apart from Barkley, backs like Tony Pollard, Austin Ekeler, Josh Jacobs, Derrick Henry, and D’Andre Swift are some of the top-tier running backs going to be free agents this year.

However, the Vikings might consider Devin Singletary, Zach Moss, AJ Dillion, and JK Dobbins as Running Back options. Who do you think the Vikings will pick as their next RB? Or would they make do with whatever they have on their roster right now? Let us know what you think.
