It’s a time-tested process. A rookie is drafted and given a mentor so that he can learn the nuances, tricks, and details of the world’s toughest and biggest football league. But only a few times does the intern surpass the master. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, has already done that. His mentor, Alex Smith, opened up about their relationship. It was amazing!
The retired quarterback talked with Jason Fitz in a talk show aired on Saturday. When asked about his role in developing Mahomes as a player, the veteran surprised everyone by saying, “You know, listen. I think that’s where a little like I wasn’t necessarily focused on developing Patrick like I was trying to play the best football I could play.” But he admitted that being in his 13th season, he had everything all perfected: the mindset, the strategies, and the drive to win.
The Grim Reaper saw everything. And they were always together. Smith added that both of them watched films, ate, trained, and practiced together. So, the young boy chose at will. So far, he has been great. Former Chiefs QB also mentioned that he never told him anything but was always a good teammate, which taught the young man to lead by example.

That was the perfect coaching strategy. Sometimes, you cannot talk about everything you do. But you can always show the things in which you do. Also, it is best for a person as they pick and choose the things that they want to learn. Mahomes learned how to operate as an ace quarterback in the league. With 3 Super Bowls in 7 years, he has achieved celebrity status in the sport. A humble guy that he is, the Chiefs quarterback has praised his mentoring quarterback many times. That’s humility.

Patrick Mahomes full of gratitude for Alex Smith
While talking about his mentor in the early off-season this year, the Grim Reaper had said, “He taught me a lot every single day and gave me a lot of lessons.” This clearly shows the respect he has for Smith. However, it wasn’t that simple.
In an interview, Mahomes called his mentor ‘ a true professional‘ who taught him the preparation strategies for every scenario on the gridiron. In his own words, “I’m still doing the exact process that he was doing the first year.” The decision to show him everything came from a personal experience of Smith, who never got to watch any veteran and had to learn everything on his own.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Patrick Mahomes' success more about talent or the influence of a great mentor like Alex Smith?
Have an interesting take?
While Smith did everything to be the best quarterback in the league, Mahomes followed him everywhere. And that required one thing. Reaching before he arrived and leaving after he left. That’s what he did. Alex Smith himself talked about it in an interview later and recalled that there wasn’t a day when Showtime wasn’t already there in the morning.
That’s the dedication you need if you want to make it big. Coz winning a game and making a name for yourself are two different things. But the Chiefdom knew that a star was there. Be it those no-look passes or being energetic even in the ending seconds, Patrick Mahomes has been a force to reckon with ever since he came on the gridiron.
