There hasn’t been a single day since the 2025 offseason kicked off when the Steelers haven’t made headlines for a quarterback. Actually, ever since future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Steelers haven’t had their future field general. This season, the debate was between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. But after the Steelers saw both of them head to New York, they were forced to bring back Roethlisberger’s heir apparent, Mason Rudolph, for a second chance. There’s also their constant flirting with Aaron Rodgers, who still remains two minds whether to sign or not. Now, with the NFL draft 13 days away, it seems they still aren’t in a rush to decide whether they are drafting a QB or not.

After listening to Alabama’s Jalen Milroe describe his meeting with the Steelers, it’s difficult to predict what they are cooking behind the Steel Curtain. On Good Morning Football Friday, Milroe opened up on the conversation he had with Tomlin a month ago. Unlike the Steelers hosting Shedeur Sanders in Pittsburgh, Tomlin made the trip to Tuscaloosa to meet Milroe. So, you did expect the Steelers’ head coach to carry some sort of energy, right? But no, Jalen Milroe said, “Coach Tomlin was chill, laid back when I met with him.”

He went on to add that he was preparing himself for a tough conversation. However, Tomlin gave a completely opposite vibe, “You always think you gotta keep your head up high. You gotta be serious the whole conversation. Nah, it was a laid-back conversation. And, of course, we talked football. We talked game and stuff like that. But it was definitely a more laid-back conversation.” Well, judging by their laid-back conversation, it’s difficult to predict what Tomlin is thinking about Milroe.

He’s the 2024 Academic Heisman holder with a 3.52 GPA. Broncos QB Bo Nix and Chargers QB Justin Herbert are recent recipients of the William V. Campbell Award. Now, if you look at his on-field performance, Milroe could be an excellent addition to Arthur Smith’s run game. With Najee Harris’ exit, Milroe could step up big time, not only as a QB but also as an explosive runner. He remains one of the top athletic prospects in this year’s QB class. In addition to his 16 TDs on the air, Milroe scored 20 on the ground.

Yeah, there’s his lack of accuracy as a signal caller, having thrown 11 INTs last season. But considering that Aaron Rodgers takes most of the snaps, Jalen Milroe could come in and give the Steelers that edge on the ground. While the Steelers continue to ponder upon the choice of Milroe ahead of the draft, he isn’t the only one on their list. Milroe is probably the second option Pittsburgh could resort to if they can’t get Shedeur Sanders.

Steelers host Shedeur Sanders, hoping for a near-impossible scenario

Running up to the NFL draft, Sanders was considered a top 2 QB prospect behind Cam Ward. However, since his Colorado Pro Day, which was supposed to give him a boost ahead of the draft, ended up tanking his stock. Despite Sanders completing 62 of his 67 passes, the league evaluators believe he lacks the necessary arm strength. He might have an accurate aim, having led the college with a 74% completion rate last season. Still, Sanders has been unable to stop his draft slide. So, if he doesn’t get picked as a top 5 prospect, the chances of Shedeur landing in Pittsburgh could be high.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Mike Tomlin's laid-back style the secret sauce for attracting top quarterback talent to the Steelers?

Have an interesting take?

That’s why the Steelers also hosted Sanders for a pre-draft visit on Thursday. He even went on to describe his meeting “as a 10,” adding, “I enjoyed my time here in Pittsburgh. I think I connected with all the coaches, and it was real fun.” Sanders also specifically talked about Tomlin and how he gets a familiar feeling from the Steelers HC: “I understand the mindset of why they win a lot. Just how he is as a person. The values that the team has. And what he preaches from his staff down, it’s similar to my dad.”

Sanders’ dad, Deion, is a huge culture-builder himself. Since he took over Colorado with his son as the QB, the Buffaloes won 9 games for the first time since 2014. As for Tomlin, he also led the Steelers to a historic postseason run ever since he came to Steel City. However, those runs have been limited to only the Wildcard weekend. Maybe by drafting Sanders, it could change. But the question is, is it really possible that Sanders remains when the Steelers are on the clock? Well, only time will tell what’s gonna happen when No.21 gets called in Green Bay.
