It was the first exciting playoff Sunday. The Eagles were up against the Packers. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the home team was ahead with 16-3. So, the coach substituted AJ Brown in the 4th quarter. While sitting on the sidelines, he pulled off something that amazed everyone.
Reading a book! That’s the last thing that ever comes to your mind while your team is battling on the gridiron. While talking to the reporters after the game, he cleared his stance on the book for inspiration and said, “I always revert back to the beginning of the book that says if you have a clear mind and conscience, nothing else really matters. If you’re humble, you can’t be embarrassed.” That’s a pretty sound message. Though he couldn’t apply it against the Packers, finishing the game with 1 reception for 10 yards, his team won.

Once the visuals went viral, everyone wanted to know what the book was. We got the answer. The book AJ Brown was reading on the sidelines was ‘Inner Excellence‘ by Jim Murphy. With a 4.4 of 5 rating on Goodreads and 4.7 of 5 rating on Amazon, the book helps the reader to achieve peak performance with personal fulfillment. That’s all that really matters. Isn’t it?
Everyone was thinking he was tense when he took out the book. But that’s not the case. When asked about his mindset, he replied, “No, I was not frustrated at all. I figured that’s what y’all probably thought.” It caught the attention of the announcers as well.
Tom Brady was announcing the game with Kevin Burkhardt. Even he was surprised seeing AJ Brown reading the book and commented, “I haven’t seen too many people read books, but I’ve seen a quarterback eat a hot dog.” It was a reference to the Jets’ QB Mark Sanchez who ate a hot dog during their 38-0 victory against the Raiders in 2009.
It was a perfect game from the Eagles’ standpoint. While Brown didn’t perform well, others filled his place and took them over the line. But everyone was waiting for him to say something.

AJ Brown praises himself after the wildcard win
With an easy 22-10 win against the Packers, the Eagles moved into the divisional round. But AJ Brown wasn’t very vocal. He was happy in his mind. After the game, he shone a light on himself and said, “I feel good. It didn’t show up in the stats, but I did a lot today for my teammates.” That was a brave thing to say after just one reception and 10 yards.
They know about his reading habits. But the cameras caught it for the first time. AJ Brown brings it to every NFL game he plays. And his teammate has also given it a sweet name, ‘The Recipe.‘ It has helped the receiver do wonders on the field. In 16 games (13 starting) this year, he has 67 receptions for 1,079 yards with 7 touchdowns. That’s a good number.
