Can Carson Wentz truly make a difference for the Chiefs, or is he just backup material?

Everybody deserves a teammate like Carson Wentz! The former Philadelphia Eagles QB will start a new journey with the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 season. After spending a season with the LA Rams, Wentz signed for the reigning champions this offseason. But, much like his time at the Rams, Wentz will most likely spend the season as the backup QB. However, the 31-year-old doesn’t mind!

After the offseason practice with the Chiefs, Carson Wentz opened up on the “grind” playing as Patrick Mahomes‘ backup QB. “We’re only in here a handful of hours every day,” said the new signee. The North Carolina native is getting accustomed to the new surroundings and instructions from head coach Andy Reid. As for his role as Mahomes’ deputy, the former Colts QB promised to help him “off the field, on the field, whatever.”

“Pat and I already have a great relationship and that’ll keep growing,” said Wentz. The former first-round pick will be a competent backup to Patrick Mahomes and his stats are a testament to that. Wily veteran Carson Wentz has 153 touchdowns and 22,292 passing yards. He was also a big part of Eagles winning the Super Bowl in the 2017 season. But Wentz will be the deputy unless Mahomes gets injured, and the chances of it are quite unlikely.

Patrick Mahomes is one of the fittest QBs in the league! The 28-year-old has been available for every Chiefs game since the 2020 season. The three-time Super Bowl MVP even played the 2023 postseason with an ankle sprain! If the Texas Tech alum’s injury record is any indication, Wentz is unlikely to get much game time. Regardless of his future, Carson is a favorite in the Chiefs’ camp!

Carson Wentz already has a fan in Travis Kelce

What’s your perspective on:

Can Carson Wentz truly make a difference for the Chiefs, or is he just backup material?

Have an interesting take?

Travis Kelce is a big admirer of Carson Wentz! During a June 2024 episode of the ‘New Heights’ podcast, the Chiefs’ superstar tight end revealed that the Bret Bell Award winner was “killing it” in the minicamp. In the last two seasons, the QB has only played 10 games for the Washington Commanders and the LA Rams. Hence, his hitting the ground running will inspire a lot of confidence in Wentz.

Other than Travis, the head coach Any Reid is impressed with the new addition to his roster. After failing to bring him in last season, Coach Reid is happy to have the former Colts player! “Carson looks sharp. He’s picking things up fast, smart guy, and he fits well. Seems like a heck of a person, and he’s good in that (QB) room,” said the 66-year-old.
