Is Justin Fields the future of the NFL, or just another overhyped rookie?

Is something fishy going on in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ locker room? About two months ago, Justin Fields mentioned his then-budding friendship with veteran QB Russell Wilson. He acknowledged by saying, “Any question that I have, I can always go to Russ asking for advice. He’s going to give his knowledge.” But what happened now? Does the QB1 title create a rift between the two?

The Steelers started the season with Fields as their quarterback 1 for the 2024 season when Wilson was ruled out due to a calf injury. Since then, Pittsburgh has won three consecutive games in three weeks. Celebrating the team’s last 20-10 victory against the Chargers, Mr. Unlimited took to his official Instagram account to share his teammates’ images. But wait! One notable absence in these was of Justin Fields. And now, this suspicious rivalry has been reportedly ignited by Fields himself, after Russell Wilson’s snub.

Although Justin Fields is the starting quarterback for the team, Russell Wilson still holds the title of QB1 on the computer, i.e. in the depth chart. Hence, when the reporters asked Fields about it, the 25-year-old QB didn’t hesitate to answer this. He reacted, via B/R Gridiron on X, “A listing on a computer? Nah, I’m good.” Justin Fields simply admitted that he doesn’t care about being listed as QB2 on the depth chart.

This came just after Russell Wilson decided to snub him from his Instagram stories, while tagging a few of his teammates after the Week 3 win. So, does that mean they are having some cold rivalry between them? Well, nothing has been revealed yet. But if we look back to Fields’ previous statements when the Steelers won against the Broncos, it feels maybe everything is fine between the two.

So, what happened was after the win over Denver, Fields mentioned, “I think we all know Russ got kind of did dirty last year. So I know he wished he could have played today in this game, but it’s awesome getting a win for him. He got a petty game ball.” Hence, this shows that there might be some respect and friendship left between them. And not only that! The young quarterback also praised Russell Wilson in a recent podcast, which further explains the positivity in the locker room.

Have an interesting take?

The Steelers have found themselves in a pretty great situation this season. They took a chance on both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, not knowing exactly how things would play out. But with Wilson nursing a calf injury, Fields stepped in and took control of the offense. And he has been playing so well that, according to coach Mike Tomlin, the team isn’t in a rush to hand the starting job back to Wilson. Now this has created some speculation about the quarterbacks’ relationship.

But Fields, who joined his teammate, Cameron Heyward, on his podcast, has nothing but praise for Russell Wilson. He mentioned that despite being sidelined, “Russ has been great for me so far, and he’s been nothing but help. Like, I can ask him a question and he’s going to tell me what he thinks. He’s just always cheering the guys on. Even his time being out, he’s a huge supporter, so it’s been great having him there for sure.” So, it still means Wilson is being a big brother to Fields when it comes to taking the leadership.

And with his support, Fields has recorded “completion percentage (73.3), interception rate (1.3 percent), and passer rating (95.3)” in three weeks.
