Missouri voters just rejected $800M for KC—are they out of their minds or onto something?

As the NFL season approaches, Missouri voters have shared their opinions on an issue involving the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. It looks like a debate on who should play a major role in bearing the cost was heating up. And this time, Missouri’s mayor Quinton Lucas shared his side of the debate, while he came with an important update on the Royals and the Chiefs.

As per the 27th August X post of Starcade Media, Mr. Lucas said, “The Chiefs will be playing in Kansas City, Missouri, for a generation to come. The Royals will be playing in Kansas City, Missouri, for a generation to come. Don’t get distracted by the day-to-day sausage making. Good work is getting done to ensure a positive future for all.” And it looks like the Missouri voters didn’t remain silent to his takes. On 29th August, they emphasized that the team owners should stand on the frontline to pay the bills for new stadiums. And that’s evident from the poll released by Saint Louis University and YouGov, where the electors opined that 67% of the stadium costs should be covered by the owners of Mahomes’ Chiefs and the Royals.

Moreover, they shared that only 34% of the costs should be shared by the local and state governments. In addition, the voters’ voices were further promoted by university professor Steve Rogers, who emphasised that owners should pay 2/3rd of the costs for a newly built stadium. But this take from the Missouri voters isn’t something new. Earlier this month, the voters rejected a sales tax measure which could have funded a new $800M Project ballpark for the Royals.

Even though it could have been a renovation for the Arrowhead Stadium, the voters didn’t support it. More than 58% of the Jackson County population was against that measure. And it looks like the citizens were not ready to pay taxes for the development or renovation of the Arrowhead Stadium.

Amidst all the views of the voters, how did Patrick Mahomes deal with similar situations?

Have an interesting take?

After the proposition towards building a downtown baseball stadium in the Arrowhead Stadium was made, it was Patrick Mahomes who made an appeal to the Kansas citizens, “Let’s keep this rolling.” And that’s not all, as it seems like he has an intention of supporting various renovation projects on football stadiums.

Per reports of August 2023, Mahomes donated  $5 million to Texas Tech, his alma mater, to increase the $242 million fund for a renovation of the Dustin R. Womble Football Center and the south end zone of the Jones AT&T Stadium. This impressive act from Mahomes brought praise from Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire, who said, “He is arguably the best brand in sports, not only for his success on the field but for what he and his family do off it.”

With his deep interest in stadium renovations, it’s safe to say that the QB has no intentions of just letting the citizens bear all of the cost, as he is willing to make contributions of his own to ‘keep it rolling’.
