You don’t know the depths to which Patrick Mahomes goes just to improve 1%. The grind is real, and the Kansas City Chiefs GM has seen it first-hand. Mahomes’ work ethic is amazing, and he makes it a point to imbibe the same ethic in his teammates. If Mahomes was not the Chiefs QB, they might not even have been in the playoffs, forget the Super Bowl.

Tyreek Hill leaving the KC was a huge curveball to Mahomes and he had to go to great lengths to make do with what he had. GM Brett Veach revealed Mahomes’ special preparation tactics that he uses with rookie or inexperienced receivers. Once you know Patrick Mahomes’ work ethic, you might gain clarity on why he’s won back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

“We get done in practice, we get done with the meetings meetings and he [Mahomes] comes to the special team’s phase of practice, brings the receivers in and goes through the tape,” said the Kansas City Chiefs’ GM on the DraftKings Podcast.

He then added, “So, you have the coaching element of the coaches breaking down the practice tape going through the film. Pat will do that again on his own with the receivers. So you’re going to get coach Reid’s perspective, you’re going to get the OC, the quarterback’s perspective but then you’re also during special teams’ phase of our practice, you’re going to get Pat’s perspective of it too.”

The Kansas City Chiefs’ receiver core was disappointing last year. So much so that Rashee Rice led the Chiefs receivers with more yards and touchdowns combined than others like MVS and Kadarius Toney. It got to a point where Patrick Mahomes and his receiver Travis Kelce broke Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski’s post season record with 16 touchdowns. So Mahomes might have known that his efforts were working out.

This year is going to be more hectic because the 3x Super Bowl winner also has Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown to teach. But there’s something about Tyreek Hill and Mahomes combo that cannot be beaten. So, what led to Mahomes going to such depths?

Brett Veach opens up about Patrick Mahomes post Tyreek Hill’s exit

Tyreek Hill was the Kansas City Chiefs’ production powerhouse besides Travis Kelce. In his Super Bowl winning season with the Chiefs, he put up 1,276 yards and 15 touchdowns. He and Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs went to the Super Bowl again the next year where he put up 1,239 yards but lost to Tom Brady’s Buccaneers. Obviously, there was a chemistry here that the Chiefs couldn’t replicate after his exit.

“A couple of years ago, actually was the year when we lost Tyreek and Pat wanted to make sure that, you know, he had a lot of chemistry with Tyreek we had some new receivers and I think JuJu [Smith-Schuster] was here and some other guys and Pat wanted to make sure that he got on the same page as those guys,” elaborated the KC GM.

Out went Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in the 2022 season and the Chiefs signed JuJu Smith-Schuster. The Chiefs won a Super Bowl that year against the Philly team. Travis Kelce had to step up that year and play even harder. But coming back to Smith Schuster, he picked up 933 yards and 3 touchdowns that year. Despite that, the Chiefs didn’t keep him, and he moved on to the New England Patriots.

It came as a shock to Tyreek Hill when the Chiefs won a Super Bowl without him. He even took a trip to Tokyo just so he could get away and heal his shattered ego. Mahomes’ grind is unprecedented. This year is going to be different for the Chiefs for a lot of reasons.

They’ve picked up Xavier Worthy who broke the 40-yard dash record during the combine. So, they got another speedster to replace Hill and he looks good in training camp. There was a video of Mahomes throwing a Hail Mary to Worthy and his ball tracking skills were on point. So, there’s some hope there.

But the Chiefs are facing a tumultuous schedule ahead of the 2024 season. Will Mahomes’ drive to become just 1% better yield result this season? More importantly, can they 3 peat now? Let us know what you think.
