Is Cameron Sutton's career with the Steelers doomed after his eight-game ban?

Cameron Sutton is about to take a major financial hit! The Pittsburgh Steelers Cornerback was dealt a major blow after the NFL handed him an 8-game ban! The verdict comes after the CB’s domestic violence arrest in March 2024, allegedly involving a girlfriend. After their investigation, the NFL announced on Monday, July 8, that Sutton will serve an 8-game ban in the 2024 regular season.

NFL insider Adam Schefter said Sutton has accepted the terms and won’t appeal against the verdict. However, it will come with a big financial burden! As per an NBC report, the 29-year-old will lose $537,777 from his purse. Considering Sutton signed only a 1-year contract with the Steelers worth $1,210,000, the loss is almost 50% of his salary. But this isn’t the first time the Georgia native has lost an enormous sum of money.

In March 2024, the Detroit Lions released Sutton after his felony charge, which was later reduced to a misdemeanor battery. The decision to cut Cameron Sutton meant that he’d lose $10.5 million from his Lions contract. So, with him being guilty of violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy, Cameron Sutton’s career takes another major hit!

This will be Sutton’s second stint with the Steelers. Before moving to the Lions in 2023, the Tennessee alum spent 6 years with The Black and Gold. Though his career is currently riddled with controversies, Cameron Sutton did express the desire to move on from it previously.

Cameron Sutton wants to move on

Cameron Sutton was an active participant in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ OTAs in June 2024. While the cornerback could not open up on the domestic violence case due to legality, he wanted to move forward with his career. “It’s all about how you handle it,” claimed Sutton. According to the Steelers star, he wants to “strike” back against all the adversities in his life and recover from the “phases” that may “dim your light.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Cameron Sutton's career with the Steelers doomed after his eight-game ban?

Have an interesting take?

Although he won’t be available for the majority of the season, the Steelers will return to pre-season training on July 2024. Sutton was unlikely to start the season anyway as Joey Porter Jr. is the first-choice LCB for the Steelers. Players like Darius Rush and Thomas Graham Jr. are also there as backups; chomping at the bits for an opportunity! Hence, Sutton’s absence won’t affect the squad’s depth too much ahead of a crucial season.

NFL experts are already declaring Pittsburgh as a Super Bowl candidate. If Russell Wilson can lead the team to the playoffs, there may be a chance that Cam Sutton can contribute to the latter part of the 2024 campaign. Losing $537,777 even before a ball is kicked, will certainly motivate the Steelers No. 20 to show what he can do on the gridiron in the 2024 season.
