Seeing Russell Wilson's reaction to remission—does this make you respect him more as a person?

No feeling is worse than losing your dear ones. One that Russell Wilson knows all too well. In 2021, a week after he lost his friend to cancer, Wilson didn’t break his breath as he spoke for 8 minutes, cherishing and reminiscing the moments with him. Now, as the life’s clock changes hands, three years following the passing away of his best friend, the former Broncos QB preaches the importance of seeking happiness in challenging times.

On the morning of the 14th of July, Russell Wilson tweeted a clip of a father-son duo dancing with this caption, “This is what life is all about! Joy in the midst of the trials! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾” We wonder if the 35-year-old had a reactionary pause, remembering the passing away of his friend. Why?

Because it was not just a random dancing trend, but a father celebrating his 5-year-old son’s victory over cancer. If you are up with the TikTok trends, you could make out the song playing in the background – “Keys Diary” by DJ NoSo. The text over the father-son dancing duo read, “When your son is now 5 years cancer free!”

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift. That is why it’s called the present!” Many of you might remember this famous quote by Master Shifu from the Kung Fu Panda’ movie. And it just fits the scene so perfectly. Life’s not easy. But once in a while, we must find a reason to smile. Russell Wilson was also trying to share these feelings and guess what? His tweet did not go in vain!

His fans received his message in goodwill. Some commented, sharing anecdotes of similar experiences, while others showed their agreement with an “Amen!” As the Broncos signal caller shared the video, it seemed to carry a poignant tribute to the past. The one question that must be bugging you is ‘How Wilson might have dealt with the passing away of his best friend?’

Have an interesting take?

On the 15th of September 2021, Trevor Moawad lost his battle with cancer. Three days later, on the 18th, in a press conference, his best friend and the then-Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson was asked to share a few words on the same. How did his 8-minute speech go? While saying it might be tough for him to talk about it, he passed a smile. He wasn’t happy, of course. But Wilson chose to remember the best times with Trevor and reminisce. That’s one of the ways of dealing with grief.

Moawad was Wilson’s longtime mental-conditioning coach and business partner. But above all, in the quarterback’s words, his best friend. A best friend who he shared his highest of the highest moments with, to the lowest moments. Wilson did not stutter when he said this about his buddy ‘Trev’, “When I think about my relationship with Trevor, I think about a man who was humble. I think about a man who always served, who always gave back. He was always dedicated to working and helping everyone. And everybody he helped, it seemed, they always got better.”

Wilson laid his emotions bare in front of the press. From the minute details of his first-ever conversation with Moawad at the IMG academy, ahead of the draft, to giving him the credit for helping him move past the SB XLIX loss to the New England Patriots. And the Hawks’ jersey No. 3 shared all this with a smile – masking the sadness of the loss.

Besides his relationship with Russell Wilson, Moawad was also renowned for his work with the Jacksonville Jaguars and several college programs, including Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State. He also co-founded Limitless Minds with Wilson, bringing his teachings to the corporate world.

“What I’ll say about Trev though, the last thing I’ll say is that, you know, Trev I thank you. You know, I thank you. I wish I could talk to you again. But, I’ll see you again. The best is ahead. Go hawks,” Wilson concluded as he sadly stepped away from the podium.

Players are humans, after all. They shed sweat, blood, and tears, not only on the gridiron but in all walks of life. Russ’ tweet, along with his personal experience, only tells us that it’s the moments you share with your loved ones that you carry forward in your life.
