Kaepernick and Rapinoe reminiscing—Do they still inspire you as American sports icons?

Do you remember Colin Kaepernick? The ex-QB of the San Francisco 49ers who spent an entire offseason not being signed by any team in 2016. And till today, Kaepernick has been out of football. But, it seems like he has an unconditional love for sports, as he was seen by the side of a former American soccer player at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The former QB shared Megan Rapinoe‘s Instagram story of 15th August, which shows a wholesome moment of him smiling beside the former soccer player. Well, it seems like both showed up in the crowd to support the USA’s gold medal-winning soccer match against Brazil at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, this is not the first time that Kaepernick and Megan stood together.

This takes us back to 2016 when Kaepernick went down on one knee to ‘kneel‘ during the U.S. national anthem in the Niners’ preseason game on 1st September 2016. It was an effort from him to protest against racism-induced violence but ultimately led the NFL to ban the QB.

Well, Colin was later joined by Rapinoe, who kneeled during the national anthem for the first time ahead of a Reign match on September 4, 2016. Furthermore, Kaepernick was also praised by Rapinoe for his actions, “I see no clearer example of that system being alive and well than me standing before you right now. It would be a slap in the face to Colin, and to so many other faces, not to acknowledge, and for me personally, to work relentlessly to dismantle that system that benefits some over the detriment of others, and frankly is quite literally tearing us apart in this country,” per the soccer mom in 2019.

But, it seems like the matter has been settled, as the former signal caller expresses his desire for a potential comeback. In the 2023 season, Colin sent a letter to the Jets to join the practice squad as a ‘risk-free contingency plan‘ behind starter Zach Wilson, following Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles tendon injury. However, as New York failed to turn up, the ex-QB is now looking for another home. “Hopefully we’ll be out there,” is what Kaepernick said in regards to expectations to be with the Chargers at the 2028 Olympics.

While he was seen as a spectator with Rapinoe at the 2024 Olympics, who knows where he might end up at the 2028 version in LA? Well, it looks like the former Niners‘ HC already has a prediction on Colin’s future landing spot.

Have an interesting take?

Well, the former signal caller wished to return as a player and expressed his desire to try for the flag football gold in the 2028 event, “I’m tryna medal in flag football 2028 too🥇” per Overtime’s IG post of 13th August. Moreover, Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has recently supported the QB’s thoughts of a comeback. But, it seems like he is not on the same page with the former QB. And why so?

Harbaugh said, “If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous, He’d be a tremendous coach if that’s the path he chose.” And it looks like time changes everything, as the 7-year disengagement with the QB has changed Harbaugh’s views on Kap.

Furthermore, the duo had been together for 4 years (2011-2014) while he was with the Niners. Together they were in the Super Bowl match against the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, while Kaepernick’s peak performances were seen between 2011 and 2014. In 2013 Kaepernick led the 49ers to a 12–4 regular-season record, and today he deserves a different position according to his former coach.
