Is Jerry Jones' greed ruining the Cowboys' chances of building a championship team?

Dallas Cowboys’ offseason has been full of drama. Owner & GM Jerry Jones didn’t sign any contract extension. Now, quarterback Dak Prescott is playing in his final year on the team while WR CeeDee Lamb has not joined them. By asserting importance of the players, Jones is doing his best to divert negative attention. However, he is being mocked left, right, and center. Analysts, unable to comprehend the billionaire owner’s cheapskate tactics, are now ridiculing the team.

While talking to Evan Cohen and Chris Canty on ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike Radio show on the 15th of August, retired NFL athlete Damien Woody was spot on in his answers. When Cohen asked Woody about Jones’ definition of winning, he smirked and brought out a Jones’ wonderful investment. He said, “If you look at what Jerry invested in Cowboys, something around $140 million, and now that’s a $10 billion franchise. He has won. There’s no question about it. He has 3 Super Bowls.” Jones is indeed right there. He bought America’s Team in 1989 for $150 million, which has now become the first sports franchise valued at $10 billion. No one can deny that the 10X profit he has achieved is a testament to his astute business acumen. However, what followed was a brutal roast of the owner for the mess he has made.

Calling out the franchise for not spending on their team, Woody mentioned, “They were one of the best teams at drafting and developing guys. They do a really good job at that. But bruh, you’ll are last in the league every year in spending.” Jones has earned a reputation for dragging out negotiations, particularly deals, until the last minute. Even this off-season, he held multiple talks with QB and WR agents but didn’t finalize anything, citing the need to keep a close watch on finances. Well, other teams don’t seem to share the same approach.

Woody mentioned San Francisco 49ers who signed RB Christian McCaffrey for a record 2-year $38 million deal. Similarly, Philadelphia Eagles also signed a 3-year $96 million contract extension with WR AJ Brown and 3-year extension with RB Saquon Barkley. Questioning their will to win, he said, “What moves have the Dallas Cowboys done? Tell me!” Fans are concerned about the upcoming season. They should be! Their team is still in shambles.

Jerry Jones’ latest comments about CeeDee Lamb

The wide receiver is holding out from all team activities and didn’t attend any camp and their preseason opener against Los Angeles Rams. Jerry Jones hasn’t been able to find a way to make him return to the field. However, he is giving signals of giving in. When reporters asked him about the WR on August 13, he said, “I know he wants to be a Dallas Cowboy and we want him to be a Dallas Cowboy, so I don’t flare too much when we see something that might be taken the wrong way, I really don’t.” Lamb is also keeping a watch on what’s going on in the locker room.

Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons revealed that Lamb congratulated him via text message, and the WR has been keeping up by watching practice videos. Head Coach Mike McCarthy understands that Lamb’s return will significantly boost the team’s confidence and has already devised a plan for him when he rejoins. Amidst all the news, Lamb has remained silent, but his reputation speaks for itself.

Cowboys’ last Super Bowl came in 1995. And given Jerry Jones’ attitude this season, the wait doesn’t look to end soon. They play their first game on the 8th of September against the Cleveland Browns. Hence now, it’s a race against time to sort everything out.
