After winning the Super Bowl 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs President promised to renovate the existing Arrowhead Stadium by the end of 2024. Precisely six months after he confirmed renovation in July 2024. “You’re looking at an existing structure, something we’ve done a lot of work on, there is a little less lead time. If you are talking about something new, it extends the lead time by a year and a half. So we feel like we’re in the window now to get something done in the next six months to be in a good position. That’s the timeline we’re working on,” Donovan said in July 2024. Many assumed the Chiefs would continue calling Arrowhead home, but after Jackson County refused to fund the renovations, owner Clark Hunt has been forced to explore other options—including a potential change in home field. With their Super Bowl three-peat hopes crushed, speculation about the team’s future has only intensified. But it’s not just the roster in question—it’s where the Chiefs will play next.

Ever since the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl, speculations surrounding their future have been rampant. It is not the team’s future that is in jeopardy, it’s the Chief’s stadium. Well, the Chiefs have been looking for funds to renovate the Arrowhead Stadium since 2024. But since the Royals owner John Sherman confirmed his team does not intend to play at Kauffman beyond 2030, it was clear for Clark as well to move on renovation and be more open to building a new stadium.

And now when KC Mayor, Missouri, Quinton Lucas has shared a $400 million offer as he wants at least one of Kansas City Chiefs, or Kansas City Royals, to stay within the city, things have taken another turn. It seems that Hunt is ready to move out of Missouri.

According to a post shared by Farzin Vousoughian on X, Chiefs President Mark Donovan is “100% all in” and is ready to move to The Legends in KCK as “it’s a better business deal.”

He shared, “The Chiefs have contracts on 5 different pieces of Land in Kansas. The options of those expire at the end of March. If they want to continue the options on those pieces of land, they have to pay millions and millions of dollars after March 31st to keep the exclusive options. The main tractive land is on the NE corner of I-435 and I-70, which is by The Legends in KCK. That is where Mark Donovan wants to build a new stadium.”

Back in June 2024, Governor Mike Parson assured that losing the Chiefs is not an option. But he also agreed to the fact that Kansas is right to take their shots. “We’re going to make sure that we put the best business deal we can on the line. Look, I can’t blame Kansas for trying. You know, if I was probably sitting there, I’d be doing the same thing. But at the end of the day, we’re going to be competitive,” Governor Parson said. Considering the Chiefs’ dominance in the NFL for over the last five years, it would be nothing but foolish for Missouri to
let the relocation to Kansas happen.

The future of Arrowhead Stadium remains uncertain as the Chiefs explore relocation options, with Kansas emerging as a strong contender. While Kansas City, Missouri, is making efforts to keep the team, financial and logistical factors may ultimately determine the franchise’s next move. With key decisions looming before the March 31 deadline, will Patrick Mahomes’s side stay or make the big move, it will be interesting to see.

Will the Chiefs Stay or Go? A City Divided

Well, the Chiefs are facing a big decision. Arrowhead Stadium needs major renovations, but Jackson County’s rejecting the funding has complicated things. Meanwhile, Missouri leaders, including Mayor Quinton Lucas, are pushing to keep the team, while Kansas is making a strong case for them to move. Eventually, it seems like it will all come down to what’s good for business.

Kansas has land deals near The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas (KCK). And, as mentioned, the Chiefs President sees the move as a “better business deal.” New stadium renderings show a domed venue near the Kansas Speedway, which could bring in events like the Super Bowl. With all the information, it looks like the Chiefs will move on from the ‘Show-Me’ state.

Missouri still has a chance though and the fans especially would not want the team to leave their iconic stadium. The Chiefs’ lease at Arrowhead runs until 2031, giving officials time to offer a better deal. But Kansas’ land options expire after March 31. And that will force their leadership to take a call soon.

Whatever they decide, though, it is not just about football; it’s about tradition, business, and the fans who’ve supported the Chiefs for decades. Will they stay loyal to Arrowhead and fight for a Missouri deal? Or will they take the leap and build something new in Kansas? Either way, Chiefs Kingdom is in for one of the biggest off-the-field battles in franchise history.
