Just days ago, Justin Fields and the Steelers had a mutual interest in a reunion. But the tides have turned today. Multiple reports suggest that the QB will sign with the New York Jets—the same team that passed him over four years ago in the NFL Draft. If you’re a Jets fan, you are probably wondering how your team swung like a pendulum: They will go from a prolific passing QB (Rodgers) to a running quarterback. Fields has averaged 50.2 rushing yards per game in four seasons. In fact, the only player with a higher average than Fields is Lamar Jackson at 59.9.
It all started with MLB player Vinnie Pasquantino, who at 12:22 p.m. ET, took to X and wrote: “Justin Fields to the Jets. Sources: me??? 2 years 35 million??? Ok going to the cages to start my day.” And then, hours later, Ian Rapoport—the first of NFL insiders—reported Fields’ agreement with the Jets. So what kind of deal is the quarterback expecting?
“The Jets are signing QB Justin Fields, per me and @TomPelissero, as Gang Green gets a new starter. Fields says goodbye to Pittsburgh after 1 year. He gets a 2-year deal worth $40M with $30M guaranteed in a deal done by @DavidMulugheta of @AthletesFirst.” It is possible that the team might try to reel it as a competition between Fields and backup Tyrod Taylor, but the former’s contract could give him an edge. With this, Fields will also be reunited with former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson. Wilson will be happy with this considering he was frustrated with his team’s QB changes in the last three years. This includes Zach Wilson and Aaron Rodgers. While we are still awaiting an official confirmation on this, celebrations have already begun in Dubai.

‘Bleacher Report’ released a clip on X with the caption: “Justin Fields celebrating his new Jets deal in Dubai ✈️ @justnfields @brgridiron.” In the video, Fields can be seen celebrating in Dubai with Micah Parsons, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts amidst the free agency frenzy.
So, if the QB inks the dotted line, what happens to the Steelers? Earlier reports suggested that the team had a higher probability of keeping Fields instead of Russell Wilson. Here’s the thing though: The Pittsburgh Steelers tried to sign him before the free agency period but instead, the quarterback preferred to hit the market and explore.
Things aren’t going well for the Steelers. They might be running out of QB options. So far Aaron Rodgers is looking like a possible candidate, but other names also include Wilson Daniel Jones, and Kirk Cousins.
Perhaps the Steelers will depend on Russell Wilson after all. Let us not forget that they also signed DK Metcalf—Wilson was his first QB and they share a nice friendship. Additionally, remember when coach Mike Tomlin brought back Wilson and benched Fields? The younger QB was 4-2 in six games as a starter (10 touchdowns to one interception) before Tomlin benched him.

Chaos in Pittsburgh: Justin Fields moves on!
“It’s a great opportunity for Justin Fields … He’s been a good solid player. And now gets to go to an organization that says, ‘Hey, we want you to be our starting quarterback for a year or two. And then if it works out, great, and if not, we’ll move.” That’s what former QB Dan Orlovsky has to say about the ex-Steelers QB joining ‘Gang Green’. Critics have often bashed the Steelers this season for sidelining Justin after Russell Wilson returned from his injury.

The 26-year-old was proving to be good on the gridiron as the starting QB. Wilson, when he arrived, had a hot start, putting wins in the column, but then in mid-December, the Steelers could not get it together as they slid down from their first spot. And then eventually losing to the divisional rivals, the Ravens.
So naturally, it made sense for Fields to look for a team where he could play as the starting QB. And now that the Ohio alum has found one, it’s celebration time. The Jets could really use his dual-threat abilities. This would give them the chance to make a diverse offensive system with him at the helm.
Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts have already demonstrated that quarterbacks who can make plays on their legs are important. So if the Jets can do something like that, they may hit some unrealized potential. However, we have to admit that the Steelers fans might not be as happy, considering he could have been their team’s future.
