Are the Patriots truly 'soft,' or is Mayo's criticism a wake-up call for the team?

Now, it’s only a matter of time before the Patriots season ends, as they lost their sixth game in a row against the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Although it was Drake Maye’s TD that gave the Patriots an early lead in week 7, it didn’t end in the way they would have thought. After trailing the game 10-0 in the second quarter, the Jaguars staged a huge comeback. They scored 22 answered points within the second quarter, thereby taking the game away from the Patriots.

After their eventual 32-16 loss in Wembley this week, Jerod Mayo didn’t mince his words as he called the Patriots ‘soft.’ “Disappointing game. We started fast, but what I would say is we’re a soft football team across the board.” Well, since Mayo’s review of his team’s outing in London, the Patriots WR Ja’Lynn Polk shared a cryptic response following their latest loss. He posted an Instagram story that featured an ellipsis and the peace sign emoji.

Although we don’t know what that message meant, it could have come on the back of his zero receptions on three targets. Entering this match-up on the back of 10 catches on 23 targets, Polk wasn’t really having a great season debut season. When asked about him performing poorly after six games in the NFL, Mayo said it was due to his ‘mental’ struggles. However, the 22-year-old quickly disagreed with his coach by saying, “I believe I have the best hands in the league. So, I feel like my drops, that’s not an issue at all.”

Well, it did turn out to be a big issue, as the rookie caught zero catches on three targets in London. He even slipped and fumbled a two-point conversion attempt during the fourth quarter. NFL fans were quick to remember his words of ‘best hands’, as one of them posted, “And the b— is thrown to Ja’Lynn Polk. Ja’Lynn Polk: Butterfingers.” And that wasn’t the only comment that remembered his best hands reference, as another fan chimed in to say, “I can’t wait to hear Ja’Lynn Polk talk about how good his hands are this week.”

As Polk tries to turn his rookie campaign around next week, we can’t help but wonder what got Jerod Mayo to call his team soft this weekend.

Patriots head into the abyss as Jerod Mayo calls his team soft after Jaguars loss

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Patriots truly 'soft,' or is Mayo's criticism a wake-up call for the team?

Have an interesting take?

There aren’t many instances of head coaches calling their team soft in the NFL. It happens only when their team is doing nothing to change their results week in and week out. After losing their sixth consecutive game, the Patriots currently stand 4th in the AFC East, and it doesn’t look like they will move from there anytime soon.

As Mayo said after the game, “You talk about what makes a tough football team, that’s being able to run the b—, being able to stop the run, and being able to cover the kicks. We did none of those things.” Well, it’s true, as the Patriots’ leading rusher on the day was their rookie QB Drake Maye. His 18 yards on three carries was something that put the Patriots rushing department to shame. Rhamondre Stevenson’s 18 yards on seven carries was his closest competitor. While Antonio Gibson only put up 4 yards on three attempts.

Overall, the Patriots had only 38 rushing yards on Sunday. Those numbers might have led to the 38-year-old calling his team soft this week. Well, if the Patriots don’t get their issues sorted sooner. They can kiss their season goodbye, which already seems over after losing to the Jaguars.
