The first day of the free agency was full of surprises. The Commanders signed a major offensive boost by signing ex-Broncos OT Laremy Tunsil. Amid this, the Bengals front office is very actively looking into the options. They want their QB Joe Burrow to have all the weapons at his disposal in 2025 so that they don’t get eliminated again. The Chiefs are also concerned about their free agent, Charles Omenihu.
On Monday, March 10, the Bengals made a huge defensive re-signing. According to FOX insider Jordan Schultz, Joseph Ossai is back to the franchise with a 1 year $7 million deal. Fans were celebrating. Omenihu shared the news on his IG account and wrote, “So happy for my lil brotha go ball AGAIN!!! @beastly.”

The Bengals DE had a great show for the franchise in the 2024 season. In 17 games (3 starters), Ossai had 1 defended pass, 2 fumbles, 5 sacks, 46 tackles (26 solo), and 15 QB hits. The 3rd round pick (69th overall) of 2021 draft injured his meniscus in his rookie year. He made a key mistake in the 2022 AFC Championship game against the Chiefs, a disastrous loss for Joe Burrow & co.
Ossai made a tackle on Patrick Mahomes in the last minute of the game which gave them the chance to score from 45 yards. Ultimately, they won 23-20. Disappointed by the loss, he said, “I gotta know not to get close to that quarterback when he’s close to that sideline if it’s anything that could possibly cause a penalty in a dire situation like that. I gotta do better.”

While Joseph Ossai has secured a deal, Omenihu still hasn’t received one. He could be on his way out of the Chiefs.

Charles Omenihu on his way to free agency
The Chiefs DE didn’t get any offer from any other team or his current team. In that scenario, he is on his way to becoming a free agent. He already hinted this in a tweet as he wrote, “But I’m done. See yall Monday I finally get to experience FA the right way. This time much love from NINEO! 🅿️❤️” In this scenario, Joe Burrow’s team could target him. But that hasn’t happened till now.

His 2024 season was full of twists. In 2024, he missed almost first 11 games of the season after an ACL injury. In 6 games (1 starter), he recorded 1 sack and 6 tackles (4 solo). But the HC Andy Reid isn’t too convinced about the his importance for the franchise. He had a 2-year $16 million contract, with $10.6 million guaranteed. But he also deleted the tweet when everyone started noticing it.
However, it wasn’t the first hint which he gave to his fans. A few days ago, he tweeted, “Please don’t read into what I say on this app during this time period. Don’t need yall making assumptions.” So, the fans are ready for his departure. The Chiefs may also keep him as a backup defensive end. It would be great for the team who wants to win the trophy again.
