Is Jerry Jones losing his grip on the Cowboys with Dak Prescott's contract standoff?

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” This Mike Tyson’s adage perfectly fits with the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott’s condition today. The 30-year-old quarterback has been dealing with extraordinary calamity for the past few months due to his contract, which is still under discussion. Prescott is in the final year of a four-year, $160 million deal he signed in 2021. The two conditions of this deal are that he cannot be franchise-tagged and also has a no-trade clause in the contract.

Now as the market for quarterbacks is constantly rising, so will the demand for Dallas QB. Plus, the Cowboys seem to holding out on his contract extension this season, because they might be waiting to scrutinize Prescott’s performance in 2024. But recently, the Cowboys’ legend, Charles Haley, gave advice to the quarterback that could affect the team drastically. And NFL insider, Dave Helman, supported the stance, while also revealing the side effects of the same.

Jerry Jones probably will face a mighty blow!

On the latest episode of Speak on July 17, 2024, hosts Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, James Jones, and Dave Helman reacted to Charles Haley’s “trading” remark for Dak Prescott. When asked about the possibility of Prescott not re-signing with the Cowboys in the next 12 months, Helman shared his thoughts.

The NFL insider expressed that if Jerry Jones knew ahead of time Dak would walk away for free at the end of the season, he would absolutely consider trading Dak for the two to three first-round picks they could get in return. However, Helman emphasized that Dak holds significant power in this situation, having won the negotiation battle with the Cowboys.

He explained,Jerry could do that tomorrow if he had the control and in the big picture it would make sense because it’s gonna sting. If Dak Prescott signs for a bajillion dollars in March, and they get a third round pick for it in 2026 because that’s what’ll happen. You don’t get a comp pick immediately so you get a third round pick a year later. For Dak, how much that would hurt Jerry Jones but he can’t just get on the phone and try to recoup his losses.

As per Helman, Jones can’t just decide to trade Dak; he needs to find a team willing to pay the high price for a top-tier quarterback. Additionally, the impact of losing Dak for a lesser compensatory pick in 2026 would be a significant blow to Jones and the Cowboys. The reality is, that trading Dak would require careful consideration and finding the right trade partner, which is easier said than done.

Meanwhile, Haley still thinks Prescott should be traded!

Charles Haley challenged Jerry Jones?

Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are pushing for contract extensions, while Micah Parsons is also eyeing one soon. So, from where did this problem begin? Recently, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office have been blamed for their quiet offseason, as they couldn’t save money for their star players. Picking up this topic, NFL Hall of Famer Charles Haley criticized Jones for back-loading contracts on Up & Adams.

He claimed, “He kept back-loading everything. So now, he’s screwed. … His bill came due, and he doesn’t have the money to be able to (pay everyone). And so he’s going to have to find another way around the salary cap….He gambled a long time, and now time is up.” However, besides attacking with his harsh remarks, Haley also gave a solution.

He advised, “Trade Dak, just put him up for the trade. Guess what? Every team in the league would be after him. Every team in the league. Dak is a winner. Dak is a great person, a great leader.” But if Jones follows Haley’s advice, the question will be which teams would be interested in acquiring him. As per the reports, probably the Steelers could be more interested than any other teams as they are facing quarterback issues.

But there is another problem. Prescott’s no-trade clause complicates things, as, without his permission, the franchise could not trade him. Nonetheless, Haley still thinks keeping Prescott is wise, given his top 10 recent ESPN ranking, and last season’s league-leading touchdown passes (36). All in all, with uncertainties in the Cowboys’ lineup, Prescott must excel to keep the team atop the NFC East if he plays in 2024 with Dallas.
