Carolina Panthers’ billionaire owner David Tepper is counted among the best (if not the best) hedge fund managers. But even he cannot solve the mystery of the world’s biggest football league. Panthers haven’t qualified for playoffs since he splurged $2.3 billion to buy the team in 2018. Their number 1 draft pick in 2023, Bryce Young, has been at the receiving end of his hiring and firing approach recently.

Last season ended with 2 wins and 15 losses, an (unwanted) record. This year, they lost the first 2 games, and the QB has been benched. It has angered many analysts.

Mike Florio requests college quarterbacks to learn from Bryce Young’s mistake

Mike Florio was fiery while discussing the Panthers’ tactics on the Pro Football Talk show recently. He talked about rookie quarterbacks signing up for an unworthy organization and warned the upcoming college QBs like Shedeur Sanders, “How many careers have been ruined? Guys who could have been good quarterbacks in the NFL for 10 years. How many were ruined by the fact they ended up at the wrong organization?” We have a prime example in Tepper’s team.

During college, Bryce Young had a 23-4 win-loss record. Then began the 2023 season, and it was heart-wrenching. First 6 games, 6 losses. In week 8, he got his first win. The only other win came in week 15. This season, after 2 losses, he has been benched in favor of Andy Dalton. While (then) rookie quarterback might not have understood how the big league works, Tepper’s decision didn’t help their cause either. He’s being impatient.

His decisions might have worked in hedge funds, but it’s a different game. And his decisions have been mostly erratic. After a 1-4 start in 2022, the Panthers replaced the head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow with defensive passing game coordinator Steve Wilks. In 2023, he continued the same approach. He fired Frank Reich after a 1-10 start, replacing him with Chris Tabor for the remaining season. In 2024, they are playing under Dave Canales. How will he last?

In football arenas, players, coaches, and dynamics play a huge role. There are ‘n’ other factors that make you a Super Bowl winner. Tepper might learn that with time. Would he learn from his mistakes? Perhaps not. Then! Would it take a rebellion?

An analyst has a hot take on Bryce Young’s situation and advice for draft prospects

Florio mentioned that Texans were also interested in Young. However, that didn’t work. And now, the young QB must have been rueing his decision. But he had radical advice for quarterbacks like Shedeur Sanders, who might be in the 2025 NFL Draft. He reminded every NFL prospect of their power.

His exact words were, “The draft has become this mystical thing. We all get enamored by it. You submitted as a player, you got no choice. That’s always been my argument. You do have a choice, you have power, and we get more and more of these NIL players, coming into NFL. They have power. I want to see him use that. Guys need to think about their careers and that’s what you want as a fan.” In short, he wants them not to play in the NFL if the team is not of their choice. Looks more like a signal to rebel. But it would change the league for the better.

Who would have thought that the number 1 pick in 2023 would warm the bench in 2024? That, too, is in the favor of a 37-year-old QB (Dalton). Fans are weary. They still expect a win. Or at least wise decisions by management to let players thrive. Florio also mentioned that rookies need a thriving environment to get accustomed to intense competition. But would anybody listen?

Bryce Young’s future seems uncertain. Shedeur Sanders (and other QBs like him) must have been considering their routes to enter the NFL. Stay tuned while we bring more insights for you.
