Bill Belichick is old news now! The Patriots are waving goodbye to an era, but TE Hunter Henry isn’t waving the white flag. Instead, he sees a wide-open window—a “breath of fresh air”—with HC Jerod Mayo taking the reins. And maybe this era will bring a ‘fresher‘ era of the Patriots’ dynasty!
Patriots’ TE Henry is ready to turn the page after the Belichick era. With a new HC on board, the star tight end is excited about what the future holds. “It’s different, but it’s similar, too, [Mayo] has learned many coaching styles from Bill, but he’s got a different personality, which is good,” Henry said of Mayo’s years under Belichick. “It’s a good breath of fresh air, and change can be good. So, I’m excited for the season to come.”

This excitement comes from Henry’s ambitions to chase a ring, that’s for sure. He says he’s got “a lot in the tank,” all that past success just fueling his fire. “I’m tryna win, I’m tryna be successful, I’m ready to keep going.” It sounds like Henry’s on the same page as Mayo.
Jerod Mayo, a former New England linebacker himself, is no stranger to Foxboro. Drafted 10th overall in ‘08, Mayo quickly became a defensive beast, leading the league with 128 combined tackles and even snagging Defensive Rookie of the Year. However, injuries sidelined him later, but his hustle and leadership skills paved a new path for him.
The Patriots’ ex-linebacker has everybody’s respect for his new transition to head coach. Plus, he’s pretty chill—remember that unique draft story, raking leaves while his future hangs in the balance (with some celebratory drinks involved?) This laid-back attitude, paired with his football IQ honed under Belichick, could be a golden formula for the Pats.
With a familiar face at the helm, a hungry tight end ready to rumble, and a “different personality” that Mayo brings, it’s going to be a fun ride for New England.

How can HC Jerod Mayo’s vision help the Pats?
Jerod Mayo’s back with the Patriots, but this time he’s trading tackles for tactics. His resume speaks volumes: 8 seasons, Defensive Rookie of the Year, 2x league leader in tackles, Pro Bowls, and All-Pro honors. With such impressive numbers, he very well can be the answer to the question: how can the Patriots succeed?
Sure, injuries cut his playing career short, but he didn’t shy away from the field. Instead, Mayo partnered with then-assistant coach Steve Belichick. “In 2014, when he got hurt, I was in the Baltimore game. He’s just coming up to us, showing us what’s going on in the game, how Baltimore was kind of doing some things against us in the run game,” franchise legend Devin McCourty told Patriots.com.

Beyond Xs and Os, HC Jerod Mayo focuses on building a collaborative environment in New England. “Rebuild some relationships” and “knock down silos” were the key phrases during his press conference, when he was officially introduced as the 15th head coach. This, however, contrasts with the Patriots’ historical structure under former HC Bill Belichick, known for his singular vision.
Maybe this is the “breath of fresh air” TE Hunter Henry was talking about. A shift from the siloed structure to a more combined approach could help unlock the Patriots’ true potential in upcoming games.
