Newton says Jordan Love will be unstoppable—Do you agree, or is he overhyped?

They say that great minds think alike. Perhaps that’s why Cam Newton and Jordan Love are on the same page. Both quarterbacks were asked to give their “unstoppable plays” against NFL defenses and their choice of players is astonishingly similar. Well, almost similar. You know Cam Newton is quick to give his two cents when it comes to football, and for the most part, he didn’t spare the Packers QB’s July 14 breakdown of an unstoppable offensive play.

On an episode of 4th & 1 With Cam Newton, the ex-Panthers QB described Love’s play as “typical”, or rather predictable, of a modern QB as he knew the play from the inside out. He then used Love’s Bleacher Report interview on a split screen, but first, he gave his picks for players on the very same positions and routes.

The 2015 NFL MVP’s whole play revolves around Tyreek Hill being the main man because he thinks that no one can beat the ‘Cheetah’ on Cover 2 or Cover 3 defenses. That being said, Newton picked guys like Cooper Kupp, Christian McCaffrey, and Davante Adams to go on an option route because of their “shiftiness.” He also successfully predicted 60% of the Packers QB’s choices.

The green and yellow pantheon’s QB 1 unsurprisingly picked three names that have had a connection with the Title Town, one of which (Romeo Doubs) he has played with as a starter. However, the 2015 Offensive Player of the Year had a rather versatile approach, with the only exception being Christian McCaffrey—his running back in Carolina.

Here is one such play that may have earned CMC a place on Newton’s list in two spots, an honor that Newton has granted to no one else.

In 2017, during McCaffrey’s first season, Newton expressed immense confidence in his running back’s abilities and opted to taunt the Packers’ defense with “You’ve been watching film, huh? That’s cool… Watch this.” This came as a response to the Packers defense’s “It’s that wheel route, it’s that wheel route.” Seconds later, the attendees at the Queen City witnessed him pulling off a 7-yard TD pass on 2nd and goal to help the Panthers open the scoring at the Bank of America Stadium, and eventually win the game (31-24).

CMC and Barkley would do a great job on dummy routes given the fact that any player on the dummy route is comfortable with catching the ball because that’s not really an RB’s forte. So, even though the defense runs an empty check at H, other players will be free. If they don’t, the RB gets the ball, and in Cam Newton’s words, it’s a fail-safe option. One thing to note here is that Travis Kelce, Davante Adams, and Tyreek Hill are common in both lists because it’s honestly tough to defend these guys and they are arguably the best.

Have an interesting take?

While Newton and Love had somewhat (60%) similar thoughts in one aspect, they differ when it comes to the Packers QB’s chance at a Super Bowl. In March, Love had said, “The confidence from top to bottom is there. The organization believes that it’s the perfect time to have a chance to win a Super Bowl this year. Those conversations we had after the 49ers game were, man, work harder. Try and find ways to get better because next year we’re gonna do it.”

But Newton had another name in mind when asked to pick between the likes of Love, Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, and more.

Cam Newton would bank on Lamar Jackson over Brock Purdy and Joe Burrow

In April, Shannon Sharpe posed a simple question to Cam Newton: “Who do you think wins the Super Bowl first, Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts?” To Newton, the answer was as simple: “Lamar [Jackson].”

Love’s vocal persona might leave him with a chip on his shoulders. Maybe Lamar Jackson can do these things better, and if he were to show Newton his playbook, the veteran might be impressed. Perhaps watching the two-time MVP play has left the ex-Panthers QB in awe and he told Shannon Sharpe what Jackson and the Ravens need to do to win their first Lombardi trophy since Super Bowl XLVII.

He thinks Jackson can triumph over everyone if he gets his impulses under control. Pointing out how overthinking can kill game-winning drives sometimes, Newton said, “I think one thing that Lamar and the Ravens organization just has to figure out, is how to win the ugly games…Sometimes when I look at Lamar, it’s like, ‘bro you just stop thinking.”

The Baltimore Ravens choked in the AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs 17-10 despite beating playoff-worthy teams like the 49ers, Rams, and Bengals. Not to forget how the Ravens blew the Miami Dolphins away 56-19 at the M&T Bank Stadium.

In the championship game, Patrick Mahomes threw for fewer yards (241) than Jackson (272) with far more accuracy. On the other hand, Lamar Jackson missed nearly half of his passes as he went 20-37. The difference is that Mahomes completed 30 of the 39 passes he threw in that game. So, yes, winning “ugly” games should be a priority for Lamar Jackson and the Ravens this year.

Maybe Jordan Love can use the same advice and take Green Bay to glory on February 9, 2025, and win a Lombardi before Jackson? What if the game is against the Ravens?
