Is Aaron Rodgers going to get benched? The NFL world has been perplexed by this question for nearly a month. And why won’t they be? The veteran Jets QB hasn’t been particularly effective on the field. But despite his lack of notable accomplishments, he remains the team’s starting quarterback. The interim HC, Jeff Ulbrich, has also indicated that this will not change for the time being. However, given the circumstances, Rodgers’ playing hopes appear to be hanging by a single thread.

It isn’t easy to hear this as an A-Rod fan, but it is true. And Adam Schefter, an NFL insider, confirmed this on Unsportsmanlike Radio. When asked if Aaron Rodgers would be benched, Schefter was unsure of the situation. He claimed that the prospect of something happening is always present. Usually, when any veteran QBs do not perform well after being given several opportunities, teams bench them.

The insider stated, “Well, I think it’s always open to change. At some point, you make a decision. Looking at his contract, I don’t think they want to be on a hook.” Schefter even mentioned that providing Aaron Rodgers with playing time is due to everyone’s respect for him. The man is a true veteran who has done a lot for the game. But is it possible to bench even a veteran like him?

Well, why not? Russell Wilson’s situation in 2023 is a prime example of this. Wilson was unable to reach his full potential and performed very averagely on the field. As a result, he was benched, and Jarrett Stidham took his place. While the squad only had 8 wins and 9 losses that year, this choice made their future plans regarding Wilson more clear.

Aside from the benching rumors, the NFL insider disclosed the Jets’ financial outlook on Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers is not a financial asset that the New York Jets can depend on

Many fans can probably assume this thing. The team currently signs the veteran to a lucrative contract valued at $112.5 million. While it is huge, it is going to end in 2025. The Jets can resign the quarterback, but the cost will be too high. As a result, Rodgers’ continued presence on the team is necessary. Adam Schefter also stated that if the quarterback gets injured in future games, it will be pricey for the Jets. “If he goes down and suffers a certain type of significant injury. I don’t think the Jets would wanna be committed financially with Aaron Rodgers beyond this year,” Schefter explained.

Is Aaron Rodgers' legacy enough to keep him on the field despite his recent struggles?

Have an interesting take?

Something similar to this occurred in 2016. At the time, the Denver Broncos signed Brock Osweiler for a hefty $72 million. This big contract was based on his incredible performance in the 2015 season. But guess what? The man failed in 2016, and the Broncos traded him. The Titans accepted the trade, but Osweiler was unable to do anything for them too. And the Titans needed to let their backup quarterback, Tom Savage, play.

The team was stuck with Osweiler even after he failed to meet expectations and had a significant cap cost. Well, it appears that the Jets‘ dilemma with Aaron Rodgers could have a similar finish. Only time will tell what the end of this story will be. As for now, A-Rod is indeed leading the team. Stay tuned for more updates.
