Whatever it takes. That’s how far winners go for a win. Inhuman training, sacrificing outings with friends, discarding junk food for years just so you can reach the level to win. And even after, some things are left to be done. Because you can never be too sure, right? If doing something ensures a win, why wouldn’t you do it? Don’t you want to win? Well, Chris Jones certainly does.

The man has 3 Super Bowls to his name. He has been selected to First Team All-Pro as a Defensive Tackle (DT) from 2022 to 2024. Not to mention, the star DT holds the NFL record for most consecutive games with a sack (11). Jones makes his own luck. And that’s not just a line, because Jones is superstitious. He is doing his belief thing cause he thinks it’s gonna work.

Talking to the press, Chris Jones didn’t hold back. He laid bare his methods: “Wear the same gloves, wear the same cleats, I don’t change up cleats throughout the season.” Yep, that’s ok. Understandable. The lucky cleats. Many have that ‘habit’. But Jones ain’t playing. He’s all in for this: “My gloves smell like a dead animal, especially if I get a sack in them, it’s over with, I am not changing them up.”

Talk about dedication to a cause. Ain’t no clean laundry coming between him and his Super Bowl LIX. Chris Jones is in the mystic zone: “Lately, I have been wearing long sleeves, we haven’t lost on a long sleeve, I’m gonna knock on wood.” See what he did there? Touch wood to un-jinx any bad omen. It’s the culmination of all these ‘little things’ that he believes are good luck for him and his team.

He just doesn’t want to disturb the spirit of the universe. It’s fickle. It’s always better to be a little lucky than to give your blood and sweat and come up a little short because you were unlucky. Jones would hate that: “Even my meal prep, if I had a good game, last game, and, I will eat the same thing, the same thing I ate last week, so it’s like little things that are important, you know what I mean?”

We get it. We all do it, even though we may want to deny it, cause we feel there’s no basis for it. But one rule is eternal. Don’t disturb the winning formula. That’s what the fans believe in. And will you be surprised if we say a few other Chiefs members are in the same boat as Jones?

Do Chris Jones' smelly gloves really hold the secret to the Chiefs' Super Bowl success?

Mahomes and Clark Hunt in that same boat with Chris Jones

Patrick Mahomes depends on luck? The man is the defending back-to-back Super Bowl MVP. He is going for the 3-peat. He is the special one for the Chiefs. What doesn’t he have that a Quarterback needs – bullet throws, his game IQ, his vision… and his favorite underwear? “I threw them on that first season [and] we had a pretty good season that season.” So, what followed? The lucky underwear superstition.

The star quarterback (QB) says it’s not as nasty as it sounds because he only wears them on game days and he washes them. But if it were only so superficial. “If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them, you know, I just got to keep it rolling, so you know, as long as I’m winning football games, I’ll keep the superstition going,” Mahomes’ own admission. Don’t judge. He is a Super Bowl Champion.

Yes, some other Chiefs teammates may not have the same beliefs. Like, for example, Travis Kelce or Xavier Worthy. They have said that they are not superstitious that way. But it’s about being at peace in your head. Being satisfied that you did everything to make sure you won. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt says that he threw away his lucky ties when they signed head coach Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. But as a family, the Hunts still get together and pray before every game.

Continuing, the Chiefs CEO elaborated: “And then my parents started a tradition that my wife and I have carried on. They would have a quick kiss before each game. So my wife, Tav (Tavia Hunt), and I do that before every game, and then we let the guys on the field determine the outcome.”

Obviously, there may not be any correlation. Or maybe the link is going into the game in the right frame of mind, a good feeling, relaxed and confident. To different people, it comes differently. For many Chiefs fans, it’s a lucky omen that they will be wearing the white jersey for Super Bowl LIX on February 9. The same jersey started the 3-peat journey. Against the same team, the Eagles.
