Could Aaron Rodgers be the missing piece for the 49ers, or is Purdy still the future?

New York Jets’s owner Woody Johnson held a meeting with team brass. There he suggested that the team needs to bench Aaron Rodgers. Although the coaches convinced him not to, the thought was enough to hint at the four-time MVP’s dicey future with the franchise. With just 3 wins in 11 games, Rodgers is under heavy scrutiny. It’s quite possible that the team might release him the next year.

Hence, many outlets have since been speculating about his potential landing spots. And among all those, according to the latest report by 49ers reporter Matt Barrows, it could be San Francisco. Wait, what?

Yes! As per Barrows on 95.7 The Game radio station, via X, “The one intriguing (offseason) possibility is if… Aaron Rodgers, a guy the 49ers were definitely interested in the past, becomes available…” But what about the present quarterback, Brock Purdy? Well, Barrows speculated Rodgers’s potential entry into the Santa Clara team. However, on the other side, the reporter stated, “But, the 49ers are not as down on Brock Purdy as the public is.

Last year, the 49ers and Brock Purdy made their name in the eyes of their fans, by becoming the Super Bowl runner-up. However, this season has been a tumultuous one for them. Sitting with just a 5-5 record in the NFL standings, the team is in the last berth of the NFC West. Their Super Bowl dreams are arguably almost over for this time. So, fans are disappointed and want Purdy to be out.

Now, as per Barrows’s prediction, Aaron Rodgers could be the next one to replace Brock Purdy if the team wants to switch just like in the past. Yes! Earlier too, in 2021, the 49ers tried to trade for Rodgers from the Packers. That time, the quarterback was unhappy with Green Bay. He was delighted to hear of his then-potential marriage with Kyle Shanahan’s team. But that deal couldn’t happen after the Packers’s rejection. The 49ers ended up landing Trey Lance with the third overall pick that year. So, as destiny has arguably brought in the same situation, is Brock Purdy’s future with the Niners in danger? And will Aaron Rodgers make it to SF this time?

Will Aaron Rodgers replace Brock Purdy next year?

There is no doubt that Aaron Rodgers has grown up a fan of the San Francisco team in Northern California. After his college exit in 2005, he wanted to play for the 49ers. But the team chose Alex Smith as the No. 1 overall pick over him that year. Then again, in 2021, the Packers rejected the trade of Rodgers to the Niners. Then also his dreams of playing for the team were shattered. Now again this situation has come for both parties. It remains to be seen what will happen next.

But it’s quite possible that Aaron Rodgers still has feelings for Kyle Shanahan’s team, as he earlier said, “I’ve thought about that from time to time, and I’ve had conversations with people who think that’s an interesting idea. I think he’s [Kyle Shanahan] a fantastic coach. I think anything can work if two people can find a common ground. The common ground for great relationships is respect…..[I feel like] it would work because he’s a genius and I have a lot of years of experience.” In fact, Shanahan also believed Rodgers would fit well in the offense.

However, things didn’t turn out as per their wishes. But now the thing is Aaron Rodgers is also a fan of Brock Purdy. He expressed last year, “He’s out here b-lling, in the MVP conversation and playing like a vet. … I’m a fan, and I think it’s great people are trash-talking him, it probably just adds a little fuel to the fire.

So, the Jets‘s QB is a fan of Purdy. Replacing him would require a lot of things to consider for the 49ers. The major thing could be Aaron Rodgers’s age (40), his arguably flop performances this year, and the trust SF has in Purdy.
