Normally, a mass exodus after a 6-11 season would spell trouble, right? Well, think again, because the 49ers are here to prove you wrong. As the team seems to be treading on the difficult path of readying a comeback, all eyes are fixated on the front office. Critics say that’s not going to be easy. But if you ask the team’s GM John Lynch, their future blueprint is all revised and ready for meticulous execution…
But before that, why exactly did the team suffer a fall from grace after reaching the Super Bowl the season prior? For starters, it was an injury-plagued roster. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw tore his Achilles tendon during the Super Bowl, which impacted his 2024 season, too. Running back and 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey missed training camp and the first eight games owing to bilateral Achilles tendinitis. While he did return briefly, a knee injury sidelined him for the season just four games later. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk also sustained a torn ACL and in Week 7 vs the Kansas City Chiefs, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave missed the season except three games with a torn pectoral, all-Pro linebacker Fred Warner played all 17 games with diminished production owing to an ankle fracture. Looks like the roster never reached its full strength. Now add to that, missteps such as cutting key players, coaches faltering, and the team missing out on capitalizing key scoring moments, and the team looked like a shadow of its former self. Thankfully, they will have a chance to course correct soon.
As things currently stand, the 49ers have already lost 17 players during free agency, and have a lot of space left to fill their roaster. To explain in a little more detail, there are currently 75 locked player in total, much lower than the NFL-mandated offseason roster limit of 90. So, evidently, San Francisco is lagging, and while there are major issues, looks like GM John Lynch isn’t concerned at all.

In a conversation with The Athletic‘s Matt Barrows, the GM exuded pure confidence as he stated, “We’ve got this thing called the draft, and we’ve got a lot of picks. And I think the thing the fans should know is we have a plan. And we’re gonna execute that plan. And we’re excited about the opportunity.”
In the upcoming NFL draft (slated from April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin), the team will have 11 total picks—11th, 43rd, 75th, 100th (Special Compensatory Selection), 113th, 138th (Compensatory Selection), 147th (from Saints through Commanders), 160th (from Vikings), 227th, 249th, and 252nd—which approximately solves about 80% of their roster issues. GM Lynch assured the fans explaining why the team is focusing more on the draft, “The bottom line is you’re always looking at years out. And we forecast it, and we’ve got some big things coming our way. And you have to clear the requisite room to be able to do that, and you don’t want to get to a point where you have to do things to keep your roster afloat. You want to have that flexibility.”
Furthermore, talking about the quarterback room, the executive seemed satisfied. “I think we’re pretty good,” he said, talking about Mac Jones, Brock Purdy and Tanner Mordecai, before swiftly adding, “You never close the door.”
From these lines, one thing is clear: Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan are willing to take risks this year. But aside from planning for the future, the 49ers have made every effort possible to avoid a terrible season this year. By signing prominent players like Nick Bosa and Brandon Aiyuk.
On the flip side, they also lost multiple players:
- TRADED:
- WR Deebo Samuel Sr. (to the Commanders)
- RB Jordan Mason (to the Vikings)
- RELEASED:
- DE Javon Hargrave (Vikings)
- DT Maliek Collins (Browns)
- LB Leonard Floyd (Falcons)
- LS Taybor Pepper
- SIGNED ELSEWHERE:
- Talanoa Hufanga (Broncos)
- Dre Greenlaw (Broncos)
- Charvarius Ward (Colts)
- Aaron Banks (Packers)
- Josh Dobbs (Patriots)
- Isaac Yiadom (Saints)
- Brandon Allen (Titans)
- Jaylon Moore (Chiefs)
- Elijah Mitchell (Chiefs)
- Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (Giants)
- Charlie Heck (Bucs)
Having said that, who knows, maybe other superstars may come in and join them for this season. For the time being, the team will undoubtedly attempt to resolve their one major issue before the NFL Draft. And that problem is everything that’s going on with Brock Purdy.
Will the San Francisco 49ers offer Brock Purdy a contract extension?
Every 49ers fan has asked this question. The franchise selected the rising star as their final pick in the NFL 2022 Draft. Brock Purdy has been unstoppable in the NFL, delivering the 49ers some of their best victories. In 2024, Purdy threw 3,864 yards for 20 TDs with a 65.9% completion rate. The man performed so well that the team even offered him a performance-based incentive of $857,842.50 for the 2024 season. But, things are starting to turn sour in recent weeks. And the reason is Purdy’s contract extension.

The quarterback initially agreed to a four-year contract worth $3.74 million as his rookie contract. Purdy was drafted in the seventh round, thus this contract value was certainly too low. But, there are suggestions that the team can offer the QB more money starting next season. Some fans believe it may be around $55 million per year, which would align with current market trends. But, Dianna Russini dismissed these allegations of the QB earning even $45 million a year as completely false.

The Athletic’s reporter claimed, “That is false. That would be disrespectful and that did not happen. That’s not true. They did not offer $45M. I will bet my phone on it.” It will be difficult to predict what the 49ers will do next in terms of Purdy’s problem. It can be safe to say that the team will offer him a contract. The only question is: How much will it be?
Stay tuned with us to find out what happens in this case.
