“What we know about Brock is, he’s our guy,” the 49ers GM John Lynch confirmed his stance on star QB Brock Purdy in January this year. “We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time.” This update from Lynch was a huge relief for the 49ers fans because just a month before the same GM had huge praise for an opponent QB who may not be wanted in his current franchise. During the Dec 2024 game against the LA Rams, Lynch not only praised Matthew Stafford but subtly hinted at what he wants to see in a Niners QB, and as per San Francisco GM, the Rams GM seemed a perfect fit. “The toughness, above all else… He can get hit and knocked down, but he just keeps coming,” Lynch said. Knowing what Purdy brings to the table, this questioned the 49ers’ stance on Purdy. Now, with free agency less than two weeks away, the 49ers GM has dropped another major Purdy update.
Purdy is not just a quarterback—he is THE QUARTERBACK that San Francisco needs. Now more than ever. Sophomore season. A 262nd—dead last—pick in the 2022 draft. Above all, he was not even the second-choice QB for the Niners when both starter and backup QB went down with season-threatening injuries in the 2023 season. But when called up, Purdy put up a show for San Francisco in almost every game and ultimately led them to the Super Bowl last year. So while John Lynch may admire Matthew Stafford or any QB, letting go of a generational talent like Purdy isn’t a mistake he’s willing to make. And now, putting all the contract speculation to rest, Lynch has finally set the record straight on Purdy’s San Francisco future.
The 49ers are making moves this offseason, and they’re not playing around. After a tough 6-11 season, the team is in full-on rebuild mode, tweaking the roster and coaching staff to get back into Super Bowl contention. The front office has some big decisions to make. And at the top of that list? Locking down their QB1 for the long haul.

Lynch just confirmed that the team has officially started contract talks with Brock Purdy, proving once and for all that he’s the guy. Not bad for a dude who was literally the last pick in the draft, right? Purdy has balled out since taking over, leading the squad deep into the playoffs and showing he can handle the pressure. Word on the street is that his new deal could be around four years, $196 million, with $112 million guaranteed. Putting him up there with the league’s top-paid quarterbacks. The 49ers clearly believe in him, and now, they’re about to put their money where their mouth is.

Thankfully, the team isn’t strapped for cash. The NFL salary cap for 2025 is expected to hit around $280 million, and the Niners have an estimated $47 million in cap space to work with. That gives them plenty of breathing room to get Brock Purdy’s extension done and still make some other key moves. With big contracts already on the books for guys like Nick Bosa and Christian McCaffrey, the front office has to be smart about how they structure Purdy’s deal. But let’s be real, if you have a legit franchise QB, you pay him. Period.
It’s not just the roster getting a shake-up, though—the coaching staff is seeing some changes too. The 49ers just promoted Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator (even though Kyle Shanahan will still be calling plays), and they brought back Robert Saleh to run the defense. These moves show the team is doubling down on experience and stability, which is exactly what they need if they’re gonna bounce back next season. All in all, the Niners are making sure they’re set up for success, and locking in Brock Purdy is the biggest piece of that puzzle.
Deebo’s dippin’: 49ers & their star WR is breaking up
Welp, it’s happening—Deebo Samuel and the 49ers are officially parting ways. GM John Lynch confirmed that the team is letting Deebo explore trade options, meaning his time in the Bay is basically over. After six seasons of straight-up cooking defenses, breaking tackles like a madman, and redefining what a WR can do, he’s ready for a fresh start. The Niners had a brutal 6-11 season, so honestly, this split was kinda inevitable.

But here’s the catch—trading Deebo is expensive. The 49ers are looking at a massive $31.55 million dead cap hit, which jumps to $47 million. If his March 22 option bonus kicks in. Yikes. Some insiders think the Niners might just cut him post-June 1 to spread the damage. But if the right trade offer comes in, they’ll probably ship him out. Either way, this isn’t gonna be a clean break.

So where’s Deebo headed? The trade market is already heating up, and the Carolina Panthers are thirsty for a WR1. They need a weapon for Bryce Young, and Deebo fits the bill perfectly. With the NFL Combine coming up, trade talks are about to go full send. A deal could happen real soon.
For the 49ers, this is a massive shift. Deebo wasn’t just a receiver—he was a weapon. The dude could take a screen pass to the house or bulldoze through linebackers like a running back. Now, the Niners have to figure out how to replace that production. Do they make a splash trade? Go all-in on Brandon Aiyuk? Either way, big changes are coming, and the vibes in the Bay won’t be the same without Deebo.
