Home/NFL

The 49ers are heading into a huge offseason, and while most of the focus is on making another Super Bowl push. Some big roster moves could be coming. With the NFL Scouting Combine around the corner and the 2025 Draft creeping up. San Francisco is sitting pretty at No. 11 overall. They’ve got a chance to land an absolute game-changer in the trenches. But that might come at the expense of a fan favorite. The way things are shaping up, the 49ers’ dream draft pick could mean the end of the Deebo Samuel era.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah is hyping up Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham as a dream pick for the Niners. The dude is a beast, ranked No. 4 on Jeremiah’s big board, and could instantly upgrade the 49ers’ defensive front. “If you are looking for someone who I think would be a home run pick for them (San Francisco), what’s the dream scenario? To me, it would be Mason Graham were to fall down to them where they could scoop him up,” Jeremiah said. And if the 49ers are prioritizing the trenches, someone on offense—likely Deebo—might be on his way out.

Samuel’s future in San Francisco has been getting murkier by the day. Multiple reports have surfaced that teams are calling about him, and with the Niners needing cap space to keep other stars (like Brandon Aiyuk), moving Deebo makes a lot of sense. “Several teams have expressed interest in 49ers WR,” Bleacher Report recently noted. NBC Sports Bay Area also confirmed that Samuel is drawing trade buzz. With San Francisco sitting on around $50.7 million in cap space, per Sharp Football Analysis. Trading Samuel would free up even more flexibility to extend Aiyuk and beef up the trenches.

The tricky part? The trade market for Deebo isn’t as hot as you’d think. Pro Football Rumors mentioned that the Niners might not get much more than a Day 3 pick for him. Which isn’t exactly a great return for one of their most electric playmakers. But if they land Graham—or another top-tier defensive lineman like Jalon Walker or Walter Nolen—at No. 11, the move could make more sense in the long run. “Where they (the 49ers) are picking at 11, they’re going to be able to get a really good player,” Jeremiah pointed out.

Deebo’s future in SF? Yeah, that’s looking shaky

The 49ers are at a crossroads with Deebo Samuel, and honestly, it’s not looking great for his future in the Bay. After a mid-2024 season where his production took a hit, the team has reportedly given him the green light to seek a trade. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler confirmed that “several teams have expressed interest,” but here’s the catch—nobody seems rushing to make a move. Some squads might even be playing the waiting game, hoping SF gets desperate enough to cut him outright.

What’s your perspective on:

Is trading Deebo Samuel a smart move, or are the 49ers risking too much for the future?

Have an interesting take?

One possible trade scenario? PFF’s Trevor Sikkema dropped a spicy mock draft, predicting that the 49ers send Deebo and their No. 11 pick to Jacksonville in exchange for the No. 5 selection. That would let SF draft Michigan DT Mason Graham, an absolute dog on the defensive line. “This isn’t the first time they’ve explored trading Samuel, so it seems more likely to go through this time,” Sikkema pointed out. Trading up for Graham would lock in a top-tier defensive talent and free up a chunk of cap space. The 49ers desperately need to handle extensions for guys like Brandon Aiyuk.

At this point, Deebo’s value is debatable. He finished 2024 with just 51 catches for 670 yards and 3 TDs, his lowest numbers since 2020. Even his rushing ability—once a major cheat code in Kyle Shanahan’s offense—wasn’t as effective, with only 136 yards on 42 carries. Was that just a down year? Or is Deebo’s dual-threat magic fading? That’s what teams are trying to figure out before they throw down serious trade capital for him.

From a financial standpoint, moving Deebo makes sense. He’s set to count $15.8M against the cap, and while the Niners still see him as a playmaker. They have bigger priorities. If the trade market doesn’t heat up, SF could hold onto him until the draft. Using him as a last-minute trade chip to move up the board. Either way, the message is clear: Deebo’s future in San Francisco is hanging by a thread.

With free agency and the draft looming, the next few months could change everything. If a team finally bites on a trade offer, Deebo Samuel could be gone before April. But if the market stays cold? Things can get really awkward really fast.
