Is Deebo Samuel's confidence justified, or is Sauce Gardner going to shut him down?

Having secured the top cornerback status in Pro Football’s annual position rankings before the 2024 NFL season. The Jets CB Sauce Gardner is hoping to write more NFL history after a sensational past two years playing at the top level. Relishing on an opportunity to face him during the Week 1 showdown, the 49ers WR Deebo Samuel had a message for the CB.

Appearing on Up & Adams hosted by Kay Adams, Samuel stated, “He talk a lot of junk, so we just go out there, strap it up, and get ready to go.” Well, the 49ers WR might not be wrong about the infamous trash-talking of Gardner, for which he continues to capture the attention of his opponents. He functions as the mouth that roars, while none of us are immune to his saucy trash talk.

On the day, it could be either Garrett Wilson or Zach Wilson; per Gardner, “It depends how I’m feeling. It depends who I’m going against. If I’m going against the best, you’re probably gonna see more trash-talking because he probably deserves some of my energy.” Although Sauce likes to get into the heads of his opponents, he absolutely cherishes trash-talking receivers who he would be going against.

Sharing his thoughts, the Jets CB said, “That’s the good thing about trash talking, get people out of their game, they get to doing extra stuff, messing up their timing with the quarterback.” He even mentioned how his teammates, especially DT Solomon Thomas, dealt with his trash-talking, although some of them were way stronger than him. Going back, Thomas even compared then-rookie CB Gardner with five-time Pro Bowler Richard Sherman.

But when it comes to his trash talk, Thomas mentioned, “If you can talk trash as a rookie and back it up, you’re pretty special.” Well, talking about him being special, the Jets’ CB finished last season with 11 pass defenses, 55 tackles, and 31 completions for 251 yards while getting his second Pro Bowler nod. However, Gardner ain’t the only one who likes to trash-talk his opponents, as Deebo Samuel also has a reputation of his own as a trash-talker who delivers.

Deebo Samuel, a trash-talker who possesses similar antics to Sauce Gardner

What’s your perspective on:

Is Deebo Samuel's confidence justified, or is Sauce Gardner going to shut him down?

Have an interesting take?

Although the 49ers WR has sent a message to Sauce Gardner, this might not be the first time he has opted for this route. Going back to last season, the San Francisco WR was hyped for his rematch against the Eagles after the Niners were defeated 31-7 in their NFC championship match-up in 2022. While preparing for revenge, Samuel called Eagles CB James Bradberry ‘trash’ on the I am Athlete podcast.

This comment came after Bradberry conceded a last-minute defensive holding penalty in Super Bowl LVII, which resulted in the Chiefs winning their second consecutive Lombardi. Even Bradberry didn’t mind Samuel’s comments, “Of course, I don’t necessarily like what he said. I wish he would have used a better word to describe my play. But it is what it is.” Well, the Niners WR did convey some clarity behind the comments that could have hurt any player, stating, “Hopefully, nobody took it to heart because it’s all fun and games at the end of the day.”

But not taking anything away from Deebo, he can walk into a hostile environment while thriving upon his abilities. However, can he pull off similar performances after calling out another trash-talker with week 1 of the regular season almost here?
