Deebo Samuel's tribute to SFPD Sgt.—Is this the kind of heroism we need more of in sports?

Saturday, August 31, 2024! Ricky Pearsall, his family, fans, and the NFL world will forever remember this date. While having an altercation during a robbery incident, Pearsall was shot in the chest by an unnamed gunman when he was going to an event for signing.

As this incident created havoc at around 7:45 p.m., the police officials immediately attended the accused and Pearsall, sending them to a nearby San Francisco General Hospital at Union Square for treatment. Nevertheless, it was later revealed that Pearsall’s condition was stable, and his teammate, Deebo Samuel, thanked God for this save! In addition to that, now, Samuel is also paying tribute to the person who saved his teammate’s life.

Deebo Samuel recently shared a video uploaded by a fan page TheSFNiners on his official X account. In that video, a female SFPD Sgt who saved Ricky Pearsall’s life, recalled the incident, explaining how she helped the athlete to stay conscious after the shooting. Hence, thanking and paying tribute to her, Samuel wrote, “Mannn (with a red heart and thanking emoji).” To extend his tribute, many fans too joined in thanking the Sgt for her bravery and quick response. Well, there’s no doubt that what Sgt did in the meantime helped Ricky Pearsall to recover fast.

In the shared video, the female cop can be heard saying, “I was holding him and I was like, “hey just be calm, you know, we’re here, you know, we’re gonna take care of, everything’s okay. And I could see his breathing start, getting faster. I kept feeling his body changing.” The Sgt further narrated that intense moment by saying that Pearsall looked down at his injury and then back at the sergeant. Wanting to connect with him on a personal level, the Sgt removed her hat, hoping to make eye contact. She spoke calmly, urging Ricky Pearsall to stay focused and trust her, despite not knowing each other.

Besides that, the female Sgt said to the San Francisco 49ers WR, “It’s not your time. God is here with us. Okay! Please be calm, and breathe and be strong, okay? I want you to be strong. Like you are in the field. Just breathe.” Because of her composure and presence of mind, Pearsall listened and followed her advice, and “that helped so much.” Now, the hospital has also released him after granting him a clean bill of health. So when can we see the NFL star return to the fold?

The following day of the shooting incident, Ricky Pearsall was soon released by the hospital on Sunday, September 1. Now, although he has returned home after the treatment, he has yet to recover to get back to the game. Hence, according to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, “49ers placed rookie WR Ricky Pearsall on the reserve/non-football injury list, making him ineligible for the first four games this season.” And to fill the vacancy on their 53-man roster, the franchise “signed offensive tackle Brandon Parker to a one-year deal.”

The 49ers are going to start against the Jets on September 9 at 8:20 p.m. at Levi’s Stadium.
