The NFL Scouting Combine is fast approaching, and the teams are more desperate than ever to find an outstanding talent to fit into their roster. In the wake of the upcoming event, news broke out that some star players have refused to throw at the combine and prefer to showcase their skills on Pro Days.

This might confuse many people because why would top prospects like Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels refuse to showcase their talent? They are the most wanted players from the college football domain, so what’s stopping them from going all out? The answer to this question might be more straightforward than most people deem it.

The allure of Pro Days

It is simple: QBs are creatures of habit. In their natural habitat, they are used to training with their preferred receivers, running drills with them, and playing catch without anyone watching them. Most things are situational, and it’s hard to improvise when their whole NFL future is on the line. They often get paired with receivers they’ve never practiced, which might harm their selection probability.

While this is the case for elite prospects, the picture differs for the average QB. This is because there is a slight chance that they might get paired with a decent receiver that makes the QB look good in front of the scouts’ eyes. Another reason top players refrain from the NFL Scouting Combine is that they don’t want to risk injuries and delay their chances or hamper them.

Also, some top athletes can run drills and perform privately for the teams in their training camps. This might be because of less pressure and lower risk of injuries. One crucial factor to consider is that some QBs don’t throw as much and still prefer to do things the old-fashioned way: running the ball, just like Jayden Daniels, who has impressive rush yardage but refuses to participate in the combine.

What’s the deal with Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels?

Because of their NIL status, these players prefer to go straight to the matter. We recently learned that Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels will be in Indianapolis for meetings with the teams but won’t be throwing in the NFL Scouting Combine. They would instead do it on Pro Days when their universities host the NFL scouts.

Let’s come back to Daniels for a second. He had 1,134 rushing yards this season and 10 rushing TDs to show. Though this doesn’t mean he’s terrible at throwing, it just indicates that Daniels is good at situational football and likes to take matters into his own hands when needed. At least, this makes a case for Daniels to hide his skills at the combine, but things are different for Caleb Williams.

He has nearly the same numbers as Daniels but lacks in the run game. His counterparts, including Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr, and JJ McCarthy, agreed to throw at the combine.
