Hours ago, ESPN’s NFL insider Ian Rapoport dug deep through his league sources and broke the news that the Bill Belichick era was set to be over at the Patriots. Overwhelmed by the update, what many didn’t realize was that two other notables also stepped down from their roles.
Pete Carroll is done in Seattle.
Nick Saban is done at Alabama.
Bill Belichick is done in New England.

They are the Seahawks’ head coach of 14 years and the NFL’s oldest active professional Pete Carroll; and Alabama Crimson Tide Football’s legendary head coach, Nick Saban. While the Belichick decision was influenced by the 4-12 season, the other two stepped down on their own.
Interestingly, all three of them have recently celebrated their 70th birthday, Belichick being the youngest of the group at 71. There’s another common factor about them: Each of these head coaches is the greatest their franchise ever head.

Carroll joined the Seahawks in 2010. With a 137-69-1 record, 11 winning seasons, and the franchise’s only ring at Super Bowl XLVIII, he is the best coach that ever stepped in Seattle. Other than two consecutive Super Bowl appearances in 2014 and ’15, the development of QB Russell Wilson will be the ultimate highlight of his legendary career. However, Carroll will still remain as an advisor for the Seahawks.
Saban joined the Crimson Tide, coming from an uneventful Dolphins role in 2007. But he turned the Alabama franchise into the NCAA’s powerhouse, winning 6 national titles in 17 years. Other than one additional NCAA title in LSU, Saban had two undefeated seasons in 2009 and 2020. He is credited with the development of names like Tua Tagovailoa, Bryce Young, and Derrick Henry, who were the fruits of Saban’s redefined college football program.
The last strike to football came in the name of Bill Belichick, who doesn’t need a description. After 24 long seasons, assembling the NFL’s most fierce side ever, and developing the greatest quarterback in American Football history, Belichick will say goodbye to his Patriots dynasty as a head coach, along with the former two. It has surely been a sad day for fans of the NFL.
