A figure from the sports coach fraternity went up to the stars. Bob Knight, who was the college basketball’s winningest coach, died at the age of 83 at his home, as announced by his family on Wednesday. Along with the NBA world, NFL coach Bill Belichick is dealing with the loss.

Belichick, who is under fire this season, didn’t say anything about the devastating news of Knight. However, his past words are circulating online, wherein the New England Patriots coach praised Knight’s ‘most-talked-about’ attitude. And it appears Knight could be his inspiration to embrace the same vision in the league.

A senior NFL reporter, Albert Breer, tweeted some quotes from Bill Belichick, which he said for the NBA coach, Bob Knight. Everyone knows Knight had a hard-nosed attitude toward coaching. Hence, many would get offended because of his behavior. Therefore, while justifying his attitude, Belichick once said that Knight’s approach to coaching “shouldn’t be judged immediately.” He added Knight has his own style, and when his players look behind what he did for them, they appreciate it more.

The Patriots coach further stated, “It’s true what they say about parents. It hurts them more than it hurts you. You’re crying in the corner and you don’t understand that. I think that’s where his temper comes in. It’s frustrating to him that he has to discipline them.” Knight was one of the most controversial coaches, and according to Belichick, everything he did benefited his players.

Apart from this, although Knight was strict with his players during his career, he was good friends with Belichick, even though they were from two different generations.

A friendship of strict coaches!

There is no denying that, like Bob Knight, Bill Belichick is also one of the strictest coaches the sports world has ever seen. The eight Super Bowl-winning coach entered the NFL world in 1975, while eight-time Big Ten Coach of the Year embarked on his league’s journey in 1962. Despite having a 13-year gap in their coaching careers, the two shared similar coaching philosophies and personalities regarding their work. Probably, that’s why Belichick and Knight understand each other’s cryptic words easily.

While speaking in an interview earlier, Belichick also drew similarities between the two and shared the positive intentions behind it, saying, “Everything he does, regardless of his method, everything has been in the best interest of the kid and the team. When you and I were spanked as children, we didn’t realize it at the time, but the intent was to help the kid. That’s what his intent is.

The NFL coach learned about Knight through his friendship with coach Bill Parcells. The Patriots coach also visited him sometimes to see Knight’s team’s practices, and probably from that, he took inspiration to lead strict yet successful coaches in the league.
