Are the 49ers not a good team? Or is Patrick Mahomes just “that good” of a player to stop them from winning the Super Bowl? The Kansas City Chiefs QB mentioned that he doesn’t like losing and has proved it once again. Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers suffered the same fate they did back in the 2020 Super Bowl when the Chiefs scored 21 points in the last quarter for the win. And Mahomes continues to be the main man behind these heartbreaking defeats faced by the San Francisco side.

The hosts of 95.7 The Game were quick with the observation and had their reasons as to what’s keeping the Niners from winning a Super Bowl. They haven’t won a Lombardi in about 3 decades. Majorly, only one man stands in their way, and that’s Patrick Mahomes. This drew out a noteworthy comparison to the likes of Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Reggie Miller, who couldn’t conquer Hakeem Olajuwon because he was simply “that good.”

The hosts of the video highlighted how the San Francisco 49ers are a Hall of Fame-worthy team and that the loss “hurts like hell” for a side of that level. They also pointed out Kyle Shanahan’s decision to not kick the ball in the overtime and go for the 4th down, mentioning how the choices in various situations proved to be highly crucial. Yet, it was more the role played by Patrick Mahomes that paved out against the 49ers as compared to their errors.

Looking into all of this, it was hard for Mark Willard to accept the outcome of the game as he said, “This stinks” looking back in hindsight. Why? Because he couldn’t point out one particular instance where the Niners messed up and got punished for it. From fumbles to false starts, the 49ers were quick to lose the plot of the game in the second half, allowing the Chiefs and their QB to seep in and find the victory.

These mistakes potentially prompted the host to add that Shanahan’s 49ers have been in the top-4 four times and have appeared twice in the Super Bowl in the last couple of years. Both of these times, the team led till the second half and still managed to lose the game because of the mighty presence of Mahomes on the other side. This led him to draw comparisons with NBA greats like Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and Reggie Miller.

“Shanahan’s 49ers are great in the same way that Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, & Reggie Miller were great. Hall of Fame level of greatness. They never won because one man was in the damn way…Mahomes is that good.” The host’s comments drew a comparison of Patrick Mahomes to the legend Hakeem Olajuwon, who, much like the QB, was a major threat to the opposition.

What makes Mahomes legendary?

To better understand the context, Hakeem Olajuwon and the Rockets won the NBA championship against the NY Knicks in 1994. The Rockets beat the Knicks in game 7 with a final score of 90-84. Charles Barkley, one of the greatest players in the league, never won an NBA championship ever. Why? Because players like Hakeem Olajuwon were standing in his way before he could ever reach the championship.

Patrick Ewing is another Hall of Famer who never won an NBA championship because again, he had to go through Olajuwon at some point. It’s the same case with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. To go to the next level, teams have to beat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. And the side has proven time and again that that is not the easiest of the tasks. The Chiefs QB has won back-to-back Super Bowls now and has shown why he deserves the noteworthy comparisons he receives all across the sports world.
