Despite having one of the worst seasons possible, the Washington Commanders didn’t get a first pick. The Chicago Bears did. Instead, the Commanders decided to revamp the coaching department and hired Dan Quinn as their new Head Coach. Quinn has been responsible for taking the Falcons to a Super Bowl and Magic Johnson has high expectations from him.

The NBA legend revealed that Quinn has already begun doing a phenomenal job since his arrival. But, it appears that there’s a lot more to be done since the Commanders are itching to find a new quarterback desperately. They are competing with the Bears to find a new QB, and this time around, Magic Johnson hopes to overtake their divisional rivals. However, those expectations might take a back seat because finding a QB for the team has proved to be a challenging process and the new guy might not be able to fulfill the Commanders’ desires immediately.

The Commanders’ new HC dropped subtle hints that he might also look into other prospects apart from the new candidates from college. Maybe it’s because this time he has the aid of one of the NFL’s revered evaluators, Adam Peters (GM of the Commanders), who is aiding him find the right talent. The Washington team has 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, but they don’t want to leave any stone unturned.

Reflecting on similar sentiments and the glaring issue they are facing, Quinn commented, “I would say it’d be fair to envision we’d be taking a quarterback.” He further added, “To say where it’ll be happening, I think that’s a better question for (general manager) Adam (Peters). As the next weeks unfold there’ll be a lot of discussion, and that’s why we’ve had a great trip out seeing some guys, we’ll do that some more in the weeks ahead, but I’ve enjoyed that process with Adam, and going through it.”

Right now, the Washington team added Marcus Mariota and Jake Fromm among couple other players recently. Safe to say that it’s not working out in the QB department. They traded Sam Howell to the Seahawks despite him putting up a 3,946 yard season. Moreover, Fromm only played 3 games with the Giants and has 210 yards to show for it. His credibility as starting QB remains questionable on the account of him practically being a rookie still.

Without a solid QB, Magic Johnson’s vision for the Commanders appears a vague dream. But, Dan Quinn and his associates are doing everything to sort that out. Quinn even commending the team GM remarked, “He’s somebody that is an absolute expert at this position, what it looks like, where to go, and so going through that process has been really cool.”

Earlier, Magic Johnson mentioned his desire to “overtake” their divisional rivals, the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. But the Commanders might be straying away from that possibility to some extent. Does that mean the Commanders are making themselves vulnerable to the same mistakes that the Bears made last year? Will Magic Johnson’s faith in Dan Quinn be fruitful?

Is Magic Johnson’s vision in jeopardy?

Last year, the Bears traded their No. 1 pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for DJ Moore. That didn’t make a lot of impact. Now, they traded Justin Fields to the Steelers. It’s becoming clearer every day that the Bears are eyeing Caleb Williams. They don’t want to make the same mistake this year. This means that the other 30 or so teams will be pressuring the Commanders to trade for picks. However, Johnson has faith in this new management and thinks that Quinn and Peters can do a better job at building a better team and surpassing their divisional rivals.

About Quinn managing the roster, Johnson said, “So we know that he knows how to coach. We need an outstanding leader, and we got one in Coach Quinn. Now he’s put together an amazing staff. So it’s up to us to do a good job and free agency and in the draft and just build it, take steps. You got two teams in our division that we’re trying to catch and that’s the Cowboys and the Eagles. And so we got to take steps to do that and build our team the right way.”

With the Bears declining to trade with other teams and Magic Johnson’s expectations with Dan Quinn, there might be drastic changes in store for the Commanders. There is a slight possibility that the Commanders might pass on top fresh prospects. But, that would be counter intuitive because if the Commanders do so, they will be forced to play Marcus Mariota, a backup QB. The Washington team has to move quick if they want to make something substantial out of this draft and turn Johnson’s vision into a reality. Right now, they have options like Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye as well.
