The legends are often recognized for their role in thinking about others. Such is the case of Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani. The Japanese pitcher has recently made a commendable decision to defer his contract for a noteworthy cause, joining the legacy of Patrick Mahomes’ July 2020 incident.
Back in 2020, when the NFL teams were juggling in finding the best match for their teams’ requirements, the Chiefs QB eased his franchise’s worry, helping them in their salary cap structure settlement. Similarly, Ohtani has decided to continue building a winning team, after his enormous deal with the Dodgers.

The star pitcher Shohei Ohtani signed a huge 10-year, $700 million contract, and some people were wondering if the Dodgers could still afford to sign more star players to play alongside him. But the two-time American League MVP has decided to defer a big part of his salary, i.e. $68 million out of his $70 million average yearly salary.
Shohei Ohtani will defer $68 million of his $70 million annual salary with the Dodgers, per @FabianArdaya.
That means Ohtani will receive just $2M annually, with the rest coming (without interest) from 2034 to 2043.

Instead of taking most of his money now, he will be receiving only $2 million each year, and the rest will come later without any extra interest from 2023 to 2043. Ohtani chose to do this so that the Dodgers could have more flexibility with their budget and keep building a strong and successful team.
Alongside signing Ohtani, the team is actively trying to get free-agent pitcher RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Because of the flexibility in Ohtani’s contract, the team now has space to bring in more top-notch free agents. Yamamoto is likely to meet with the Dodgers later this week and decide on the probable inclusion of the player.

The NFL world once witnessed a similar picture. When Patrick Mahomes signed his 10-year deal, he left some money on the table so that his teammates could secure better deals.
Patrick Mahomes texted Chris Jones after leaving money for him!
In Patrick Mahomes’ massive $503 million deal with the Chiefs, there’s evidence that Mahomes looked out for his teammate Chris Jones. The reigning MVP made it clear to the team’s GM Brett Veach that he didn’t want his contract to jeopardize the team’s ability to secure other players and build a strong team.

This sentiment greatly influenced the star defensive tackle, Jones. After Mahomes’ deal was done, he encouraged the franchise to work out a deal with Chris Jones, saying he had left some money on the table. Jones eventually agreed to a four-year $85 million deal just before the deadline. This move showed that Mahomes was not only concerned about his contract but also about the team’s success as a whole.
The Chiefs, along with Mahomes’ blockbuster deal, won’t face additional financial burdens for the next couple of years, allowing them the flexibility to keep talented players on the team while still providing the quarterback with significant financial security.
