The daughter of Lynn Archibald, the former Utah head coach and BYU assistant, she was raised in and around basketball. “If you wanted a seat at our dinner table, you needed to know basketball,” recalls Lee Anne, who grew up with two brothers obsessed by sports. Her father’s career as a coach required constant moves, but each new city came with invaluable lessons about the soaring emotions and crushing lows of following the sport.

Her mother Anne wrote the book on being a coach’s wife — chart her loyalty but never afraid to speak her mind. She was one to yell at refs during games, something her daughter inherited. But that was just something minor compared to all the lessons Lee has had during her time with her father. She wasn’t just tagging along, she was getting an insider view. “He made us part of it,” Lee says.

This unusual upbringing set her up ideally for life next door to Mark Pope— one of the recruits her father had tried to land in Arizona. Whereas other coaches’ wives learn on the job, Lee Anne came with decades of institutional knowledge. From reading defenses to sticking up for herself amid the pangs of media scrutiny, her basketball IQ was an instant bonus in Mark’s coaching journey.

How Did Mark Pope and Lee Anne Meet?

The Popes’ origin story would make a rom-com in Hollywood. The two had first met each other during Arizona vs Washington game back when Pope was in college. They shook hands as Lee Anne stood in the in the handshake line as the daughter of the opposing team’s coach. Pope fondly remembers it. But when the sparks actually flew were a few years later.

While working as David Letterman’s personal assistant in New York, Lee Anne got a life-changing phone call from her brother, Damon. “I just met you, male version of you — you, but as a dude,” he gushed about Mark Pope, then an Indiana Pacers forward. What ensued were six nights of late-night phone calls and emails that became the foundation of their relationship. But what about the first date?

Well, it wasn’t without some bumps. It was in Indianapolis and Mark arrived with his niece in a car seat and their dinner came from a gas station convenience store. “I was so nervous I couldn’t even make eye contact with her,” Mark says of their clumsy but endearing start. But the connection was undeniable.

Six months later, they were engaged, starting a partnership that would carry them from N.B.A. cities to college campuses. “You can’t put God in a box,” Lee Anne says of their unlikely encounter. That lucky start established the foundation for a life together grounded in faith, flexibility and common denomination.

What Is Lee Anne’s Background and Career?

Long before she found her calling as a coaching institution, Lee Anne blazed a trail in media. The BYU journalism grad was at ESPN and later joined Letterman’s team, where she helped manage his philanthropic work. “Working for Dave, I was totally out of pass, for the first time in my life,” says Chicago-born, who spent four years on late-night TV.

Her most unexpected career shift came when Mark dropped out of Columbia Medical School to return to basketball. Outsiders were quick to criticize, but Lee Anne’s experience as a coach’s daughter allowed her to see the bigger picture. “I knew the ugly parts of it for sure, right? My dad was hired and fired in very public ways. Of course I know that part of it… But you know, I also got to know how it ends.” The connections her father had made as a coach had remained through to the end, some even after he’d passed away.

So the couple chose to look at the positives. She became Mark’s strategic partner, providing perspectives — on issues that included player development to program culture — that only the daughter of a coach could offer.

At Brigham Young, players called her the “team mom,” for her ability to relate to both wives and players. She took that to Kentucky too. Whether it was mentoring players’ families or breaking down defensive schemes, Lee Anne’s disparate experiences positioned her perfectly.

How Is Mark and Lee Anne’s Life as a Couple?

The Popes function like a world-class, whether champion – working to a plan and communicating. Mark runs practice plans and recruiting, while Lee Anne covers from player relationships to outreach for the program. Their secret weapon? Walks around their Lexington neighborhood at 5:15 a.m. to strategize before the day starts.

It includes co-parenting their four daughters, who were born in four different NBA cities. They’ve found the balance of stability in a life rife with change, letting their girls know the rewards and rigors of coaching life.

Their vision, however, unites them. “We’re creating something larger than basketball,” Mark likes to say. From community initiatives to player development programs, the Popes consider coaching their calling — not just a job — and that philosophy paid dividends in Lexington.

What Is Lee Anne’s Role in Their Family?

As a mother of four daughters, (Ella, Avery, Layla, and Shay) Lee Anne has mastered the coaching family balancing act. She has established traditions that survive frequent relocations — from Friday movie nights to postgame ice cream parties. “Your home isn’t a place, it’s who you’re with,” she reassures her girls during some difficult transitions.

Her parenting philosophy is the same as her team-building philosophy: all in. Players soon discover they’re joining the Pope family, whether as guests for holiday dinners or as community members seeking counsel. That family feel has become a hallmark of their programs, with former players coming back regularly — often with families of their own.

Lee Anne, whose ethnic background she has never revealed, seems to have had a Caucasian background, thanks to her family rooted in American basketball and the LDS Church for generations. But, as she’d be the first to say, what matters more than where she’s from is the community she’s building wherever the path of basketball leads them.

That vantage point shapes her views of team culture at Kentucky. “Winning is fun but these relationships with the boys, man, that’s what lasts,” she says.
