Heartbreak has a way of bringing people together, right?! Even those who’ve drifted apart or clashed. Angel Reese and Flau’jae Johnson, once the ultimate “dynamic duo” on the court, are no exception. Though their bond has frayed over time, a brutal case that has shaken the nation has pulled them into the same conversation.

The horrifying disappearance and mu-r of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris in Detroit. Harris was last seen getting off her school bus on January 9, 2024. Authorities believe she was lured into an inappropriate relationship by Jarvis Butts, a 42-year-old man who’s now facing multiple charges and has been accused of similar crimes involving other young girls.

It’s a case that’s impossible to ignore. Even celebrities have taken notice, including the hoop world. Speaking out, Johnson shared her heartbreak and frustration, writing, “Everyone failed Na’Ziyah, everyone.”

Angel Reese also reacted, writing, “This Na’Ziyah case is so sad, man,” on social media.

This comes amid the tension between the two. Once best friends and teammates who led LSU to a national championship have gone from being inseparable to almost completely silent about each other. During their time at LSU, Reese and Johnson were the dream team.

They ruled the court, celebrated their wins together, and even beat Caitlin Clark’s Iowa squad. However, things changed as the WNBA star transitioned to the pros and Johnson stayed in college. The distance between their worlds grew, and speculations about their falling out were (are) endless.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Angel Reese and Flau’jae Johnson mend their friendship, or is the rift too deep to heal?

Some point to a public spat between their mothers on social media, while others think the natural progression of their careers led to the drift. Although they have admitted to still supporting each other, actions speak louder than words, and lately, it’s clear they’re not exactly rooting for each other on the court.

Angel Reese & Flau’jae Johnson silent on each other’s game

The LSU star has got an equity deal with Unrivaled and was all in, cheering for the league and Vinyl squad as they faced Reese’s Rose in the second game. She even tweeted, “Now y’all know Arike [Ogunbowale] is my fave player ever.”

Meanwhile, Reese has been equally quiet when it comes to Flau’jae’s game.

On her podcast, the Sky forward hosted Pretty Vee, who gushed over Flau’jae, praising her talent. “The last time I watched college basketball was you and Flau’jae,” Pretty Vee said. But Reese didn’t even mention her former teammate’s name, choosing instead to redirect the conversation to the WNBA. Reese’s silence—and her noticeably awkward body language—reflected that there’s more to the story than either has let on.

While Reese and Johnson’s friendship remains a question mark, their shared heartbreak over Na’Ziyah’s case is a moment of unity. Let’s hope they address their rift someday and continue to use their platforms for good. In the meantime, our thoughts are with Na’Ziyah’s family as they deal with the unimaginable loss.
