The Baylor Bears have been one of the most dominant teams in the country this season. Although the Gonzaga Bulldogs have held on to their #1 spot, the Bears have constantly kept the pressure on with their own unbeaten run of 16 games. Jared Butler and MaCio Teague have been the talk of the town, but junior guard Davion Mitchell is silently contributing as well.
Mitchell is currently the Bears’ third-best scorer with 12.9 points per game. But he is their most efficient shooter, averaging 47% from three with 4.5 attempts per game. This has been a turnaround season for him after struggling with shooting last season. Mitchell recently spoke about how he made this jump.
He said, “I took time where I was just working on my shot, working on my form, working on my feet. Watched a lot of film. A lot of those things played a big part in my shooting success now. But just me working on it every day, just staying confident in myself, played a big part.”

Can Mitchell help the Baylor Bears to continue this unbeaten run?
Mitchell joined Auburn in 2017 but transferred to Baylor just a season later. After sitting out in the 2018-19 season. Mitchell proved that he can be a reliable scoring option for the Bears. But this season, he has stepped up and has shown he can lead the team in scoring as well.
Last week, during their game against Kansas State, Mitchell had a career-high 31 points. He shot 12-16 from the field, including a blazing 7-9 from three, as he torched the Wildcats defense. When he gets into a groove, he can be unstoppable and he proved that during that game.

Not only is he contributing to their offense with his shooting but also with his playmaking. Mitchell currently leads the Bears in assists, averaging 5.9 assists per game. He has had multiple games with double-digit assists as well and has proved he is a capable playmaker.
The Bears will need him to stay consistent, as they hope to finish the season unbeaten. They have a tough game against the Longhorns next, and Mitchell will be expected to continue his excellent form in this huge Big 12 matchup.
