Eddie George’s journey has come full circle, bringing him back to where it all began. As of now, with a mix of nostalgia and excitement, the former Tennessee State Tigers head coach steps into his new role, ready to make an impact. And his mission is clear—build a strong program and reignite the community’s passion for football. While the road from TSU to Bowling Green was unexpected, fate had its way. And now, with a fresh start and a bold vision, George is ready to lead, inspire, and leave his mark once again.

The 1995 Heisman winner and former Ohio State running back first hit pay dirt against Bowling Green in 1992. And now, he’s back—this time as the Falcons’ head coach. Thus, it’s a full-circle moment that feels almost scripted. And on the March 16 episode of The Triple Option, when asked to break down his journey, Eddie George didn’t miss a beat. “So, actually, what was funny—I go up to Indianapolis, and I’m at the Combine, you know, just making my rounds, saying hello to people, and watching the guys run and so forth. And, I go back to my hotel room, and I saw across the ticker that Scott left for the Eagles. Immediately, I’m thinking to myself, ‘Wow, that is so messed up, man. That’s a tough situation they’re going to be in. I’m glad, you know, I’m dealing with my stuff, but I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that,‘” said the Falcons HC.

You can say he was unaware of the grand design of destiny. So, Eddie George cruised back to Nashville, but his mind wandered. And while the road stretched ahead, his future felt uncertain. Then a moment of clarity struck. Swearing to God, he asked for a sign, a direction for the next step in his coaching journey. Look, with uncertainty surrounding his current situation, he wondered what was next for him in the profession. He knew he was still at Tennessee State due to the circumstances there, but the question lingered—what did the future hold?

Well, the plot thickened, and fate didn’t just whisper—it put up a literal sign. Here, George put it best, saying, “I’m driving past Bowling Green, Kentucky. I said, ‘Give me a sign.’ Literally gave me a sign—driving past Bowling Green, Kentucky, I see Bowling Green. And I look down at my phone. I see Urban text me, like, ‘Okay.’ He says, ‘Hey, would you be interested in the Bowling Green job?’ I text him, ‘I’m driving, call me.’ [He] calls me, and we’re talking, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is crazy.‘” Safe to say, while the timing was unreal, destiny had just knocked.

Then came the moment of truth, and the Bowling Green AD reached out, asking for help with the coaching search. But there was only one name given—Eddie George. “I was like, ‘Oh damn, okay, all right.’ You get an endorsement from—Urban Meyer—you have to take that call. You gotta explore,” recalled the HC. He also clarified: “And it was not given, okay? There were other candidates. I think there were 28 other candidates they looked at. I said, ‘You know what? I’m—I’m going to go for it.‘”

And from there, everything moved fast. Interviews came in a whirlwind, and a vacation to Arizona turned into a pricey detour when a call from Detroit pulled him into the process. “I spent, almost 10 grand just to go on this vacation before spring ball—to only get a message from Detroit to do an interview for this job,” stated George.

Right now, George is in Bowling Green, diving in headfirst, learning his staff, connecting with his players, and laying the groundwork for something special. “But it’s all due to that guy, Urban Meyer, that I’m sitting in this seat right now. Because, you know, he gave me a vote of confidence that it was a good opportunity. And, just where the program is now. And if he can see value in what I’ve done, I gotta take that call,” remarked Eddie George. Honestly, it is a leap of faith, and now, a new chapter begins for George.
