Is Paige Bueckers the most exciting player UConn has ever produced, or is it too soon to tell?

UConn has built quite a legacy over the years when it comes to producing standout players. From the legendary Maya Moore to current stars like Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, the Storrs program and Geno Auriemma have continuously churned out basketball talent. But the next generation of Huskies is already here, and they’re breaking records of their veterans left and right. Leading the charge? None other than Paige Bueckers.

The UConn senior is well on her way to surpassing Napheesa Collier in 20+ point games, even though she’s played far fewer games than the former Husky star. In fact, the guard is only two 20+ point games away from taking over the spot that Collier once held. Phee has forty-nine 20+ point games in 150 college career matchups.

However, Paige is already at 48 in her 87 career games, and she has the whole season ahead of her. But it isn’t much of a surprise, as the UConn guard has always set the bar high. In fact, she had fourteen 20+ games in her freshman year alone. It was before she had to fight injuries that kept her benched.

Had she been healthy the entire time, there’s a very real chance she’d have already surpassed Phee in this category by now. Just recently, she dropped 29 points along with a buzzer-beater to end the first quarter to help No. 2 UConn secure a win over No. 14 North Carolina. That, too, in just her third game of the season.

In fact, out of the three games this season, Paige has had two 20+ point games. And with this being her final season at UConn, she’s clearly looking to go out with a bang. But there is potential that this might not be the only record she breaks. Chances, even though bleak, are there that she can break Maya Moore’s all-time scoring record.

Moore is UConn’s all-time scoring leader with 3,036 points, and Paige is sitting pretty at 1,683 points. To break Maya’s record, Paige would need to average 32 points per game over the course of the season. Currently, she is adding a little over 21 ppg for the squad. It does sound like a tall order. But we never know!

Furthermore, she is only 282 points shy from reaching the 2,000-point milestone. If and when she does, she will become the only Husky to reach that point with a shooting efficiency of 50% from the field. The UConn No. 5 is currently averaging 65% shooting from the field.

Napheesa Collier, meanwhile, is absolutely killing it in the WNBA, recently reaching the Finals and winning Defensive Player of the Year. Next, Paige Bueckers is ready to follow in their footsteps. And guess what? She is the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

Undoubtedly, Paige has had an explosive career at UConn, overcoming injuries to become one of the most electrifying players in women’s college basketball. It’s no surprise that she could be the top pick. But which team will get the privilege of selecting the five-star guard?

As it stands, the teams with the highest odds of landing the No. 1 pick are the Los Angeles Sparks. They are followed by the Dallas Wings, Chicago Sky, and Washington Mystics. It’s all going to depend on how the draft lottery shakes out. While these teams have been rebuilding, adding someone like Paige Bueckers could be the game-changer.

Obviously, the newly added Golden State Valkyries are also in the picture, though they will get the fifth pick in every round. If Paige does go No. 1, it would mark just the second time in history that two consecutive point guards were picked as the top selections. So, let’s see how it all unfolds on Sunday (5 p.m. ET).
