Can Mabrey Mettauer step up and lead the Badgers to victory in Van Dyke's absence?

Due to a right knee injury sustained during the first quarter of the team’s 42-10 home loss to Alabama on Saturday, the Wisconsin quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke, has been sidelined for the duration of the season. Hence, it seems like Braedyn Locke will probably continue to play center for the Badgers for this season. Now, the question is who will play as QB2? You may think it’s quite obvious the next man in the depth chart. Yes, you are totally right. Mabrey Mettauer, a true freshman, has found himself unexpectedly thrown into the backup role.

You know, this will be his first collegiate game as he hasn’t played a college game yet, but he is already acting in advertisements. However, he left high school as a four-star prospect and he chose Wisconsin over several major programs such as SMU, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, TCU, Baylor, LSU, Kansas, Miami, and so on. So, you can understand the popularity he has among coaches as well as teams.

The most intriguing fact is that despite having no experience to play college football, Wisconsin’s head coach Luke Fickell showed confidence in Mettauer and he said, “He’s going to have to be ready. The quarterback position is so unique. …we could have to have a true freshman that’s got to be ready to roll.” In addition, the coach was cognizant of his achievements in high school.

In 2023, Mettauer earned Houston Touchdown Club pre-season and post-season honors as a senior. Along with that, he was tabbed as The Woodlands’ offensive MVP as a junior and sophomore. In addition, he set records at The Woodlands High School for single-season passing yards and career passing yards. Despite this, he has continued to achieve more. Let’s take a glimpse of his stellar performance on and off the field.

Mabrey Mettauer’s professional prowess

The son of Mark and Marissa Mettauer, Mabrey Mettauer, has an older brother named McKade who also pursued a career in the competitive sports world. On the other hand, born in The Woodlands, Texas, Mabrey attended The Woodlands High School and started his football journey.

In his three years as a starter in high school, he passed for 7,393 yards and 86 touchdowns. There he was coached by Jim Rapp. Despite being a star athlete, he has a plan to study commercial real estate. Additionally, the 6-foot-5 and weighs 230 pounds quarterback of Badgers also played basketball in his high school. Moreover, he was crowned with titles like Texas District 13-6A Co-Offensive MVP in 2022 and Texas District 13-6A Overall MVP in 2021.
