Can Deion Sanders truly take credit for Travis Hunter's success, or is Hunter just a natural phenomenon?

Travis Hunter has been on fire since Week 1! He’s delivering worthy games to spectators through his stellar plays, from his “glitch” performance in the season opener to the last game’s unreal forced fumble leading to an overtime win for the Buffs. His last incredible play on the goal line, where he forced the pigskin out of the Bear’s player’s grasp in overtime, had everyone joining in on his quest as a Heisman Trophy contender. Following this big play in their 38-31 OT victory, Bleacher Report hailed Travis Hunter as the “greatest show in college football.”

Not to belittle Deion Sanders’ coaching system or anything, but CFB insider Josh Pate observed that Travis Hunter’s skillset doesn’t come as part of the coaching imparted by Deion Sanders. In a YouTube episode on Josh Pate’s College Football Show on September 22, he said, “Travis Hunter’s got the stuff you can’t coach.”

Josh Pate went on to explain that lucky coaches get to experience tenures with these rare gems like the Buffs two-way star with “athletic creativity” and “maximum potential extends beyond the framework of [team’s coaching] system.” Some college football players who have made such an immediate impact in their freshman season include Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola and Alabama WR Ryan Williams.

Still, after winning the Paul Hornung Award for the 2023 season, Travis Hunter’s hype has only risen. This 3-1 season, he had 37 catches for 472 yards and five touchdowns and has become a favorite for the 2024 Heisman Trophy race. But what does Deion Sanders have to say about Travis Hunter?

Deion Sanders admits Travis Hunter is better

Deion Sanders’ admiration for Travis Hunter isn’t concealed. He, who played two sports in his prime time, even put his two-way player above himself in an age comparison saying, “Travis is better, at this age and stage he’s better.” His praise for Hunter extends beyond having “one of the highest GPAs on the team” as he said, “He’s a great human being, and he can play, his character is second to none.”

Ahead of their Baylor game, Deion Sanders lauded Travis Hunter’s special two-way ability saying that the star “cannot help but be a great pro” on both sides of the ball. He said, “I think he’s a great complement to their game (in the NFL), and he can continue to do what he’s doing now.” Hunter backed his HC’s claims on him in the last OT thriller against Baylor where he made seven catches for 130 yards on offense. On defense, he racked up three tackles and a forced fumble. A disciplined young man who also happens to be one of the best CFB players and a potential Heisman candidate! What’s not to like about Travis Hunter?
