As the starting quarterback, Carson Beck has much to prove since he is filling a big pair of shoes. Georgia has been rather successful in the recent seasons and they have already bagged two national championships. The anticipation is always high, and with this, Beck understands that much is expected of him. But rather than turning his back on it, he has seized the opportunity. Beck probably never had it easy to make the position, even if it looks like a glamorous ride.
Beck was recently able to talk in detail about how he felt waiting on the bench while the Bulldogs competed for the national championship. In an interview, Beck was not shy of saying, “It’s the worst position ever” to be in as a backup quarterback. From this interview, it is even possible to gauge just how tough it can be to be a backup QB before getting a shot at being a starter.
Getting the opportunity to play as a starter, Beck waited for his turn, practiced hard, and endured everything that entails bench-warming duties. “You do the same practices, and everything is the same,” Beck shared, “but you don’t go out there on Saturday.” It was probably hard for a competitive person such as Beck to sit on the bench and watch the rest of the team fight on the field. However, as a starter now, Beck notes that it is rewarding to have all the efforts come to fruition. “Life is a lot different now, especially after last season,” he said.

I had to ask Carson Beck if being a backup was anything like being Alex Moran from Blue Mountain State. He was very honest about his life before becoming a starter, and his relationship with OC Mike Bobo…including the first time Coach Bobo chewed him out. Watch: pic.twitter.com/d8MllVITvJ

The relationship between him and the team’s new offence coordinator, Mike Bobo, has developed much better than when it was, well, it was bad in the early seasons! “Coach Bobo coaches hard”, Beck said. Bobo, who was a quarterback for Georgia in the 1990s, has been instrumental in helping Beck show the poise and the skills required to play at the highest level.
Balancing pressure and progress: can Carson Beck continue Georgia’s dominance?
Carson Beck has steadily developed into a key player for Georgia after a few seasons as a backup. Before becoming the starting quarterback in 2023, Beck saw limited action in his first two years with the Bulldogs. In 2022, he appeared in seven games, completing 74% of his passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. His strong arm and accuracy caught the coaches’ attention, setting the stage for his promotion to QB1.

Before arriving at Georgia, Beck was a standout at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida. He threw for over 3,500 yards and 39 touchdowns as a senior, leading his team to a state championship in 2018. His high school success laid the foundation for his college career, where he’s now aiming to lead the Bulldogs to more championship glory.
With each game, Beck is proving that he has what it takes to lead this Georgia team. His time as a backup may have been tough. Still, it gave him the resilience and perspective needed to thrive in the spotlight. Now, with the support of his coaches and teammates, Beck is ready to take Georgia to even greater heights.
