Michigan community is in deep shock following the tragic loss of Greg Harden, a loving soul who gave his whole life helping student-athletes and coaches. Popularly known as “secret weapon,” Greg Harden passed away after a medical procedure, which has become the most saddening news in the football world. He was 75. Greg Harden is survived by his wife, Sheila, and his three children: Brian, Victor, and Olivia.

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his condolences for his long-time mentor by sharing a post on X: “To me personally, he was more than a friend. Greg was a mentor, confidant, and a big brother who would tell us what we needed to hear and guide us through any situation, big or small. He was an incredible human in every way and pushed us all to be great mentally. I loved him dearly and would not be in this position today without his guidance. He’ll be missed dearly.” Sherrone Moore, who shared a unique bond with the late Greg Harden, is shattered to hear the news of his demise.

Greg Harden was hired by Bo Schembechler in 1986 as a staff consultant and student-athlete personal development program counselor. In 2020, Harden retired from his position as director of counseling for Michigan’s athletic department. After which, he kept working off the field, guiding whoever needed his help. Michigan, from its official X handle, shared this sad news.

Michigan Athletics shared the news of Greg Harden’s demise. The department highlighted Greg’s enormous efforts for the program and how they were fortunate to have him. “Longtime University of Michigan administrator Greg Harden, best known as the mental coach for thousands of student-athletes who competed for the university and countless others around the world, has passed away after complications from surgery.”

In his incredible career, Greg Harden came across many successful faces. He aided in the development of many student-athletes, who later became superstars in their respective fields. The list is endless; some of the prominent names include NFL legend Tom Brady, Olympic champion Michael Phelps and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard.

“He meant the world to me and I could never have had the success I had without the time, energy, love and support he had given me,” said Tom Brady. Desmond Howard also remembered his mentor and friend. “Greg brought wisdom, joy and his calming nature to every encounter,” Howard said. “His presence will be missed by all of us.”
